OK, call me blonde but I can't find the battery in my van. Looked in the engine compartment where the manual said it should be and there isn't one so I'm at a loss. (The website forced my selection of product to 1986 - that's not correct)
The battery should be under the front passenger seat. Move the seat forward as far as it will go, and you'll see a metal plate (may be under the carpet), which comes off with four Phillips screws. To actually get the battery out, you will need to remove the seat.
A prior owner may have moved it. The 76 should have the battery in the engine compartment on the right side. If it's a camper, try looking under the rear bench seat.
Otherwise, following the heavy cable from the starter would be the best bet.
Hey there! I have a 84 Vanagon..... the main battery is under the drivers seat.... if not there,... try the passenger side..(. I have 2 batteries in mine)... push seat al the way forwards and you'll see the compartment... hope this helps!!
Back then VW was pretty darn good at hidding the battery. I would try lifting the rear seat bottoms. That is where they usually hide the battery. If it is not there, try opening the engine compartment and follow the thick wires from the starter, or alternator. It is most likelylocated near the back of the van, on the inside, below the rear window.

The location of the fuel pump fuse and relay on a 2021 Toyota Hiace van with a 1KD-FTV engine (model KDH223B) may vary depending on the specific model and trim of the van. In general, the fuel pump relay is likely to be located in the relay box under the hood of the van, while the fuel pump fuse may be located in the fuse box inside the van or under the hood.
To locate the fuel pump relay, you can try looking in the relay box under the hood of the van. The relay box is usually located near the battery or on the driver's side of the engine compartment. The fuel pump relay should be labeled in the relay box, or you can consult the owner's manual or service manual to identify the correct relay.
To locate the fuel pump fuse, you can try looking in the fuse box inside the van or under the hood. The fuse box is usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side of the van, or it may be located under the hood near the battery. The fuel pump fuse should be labeled in the fuse box, or you can consult the owner's manual or service manual to identify the correct fuse.
If you are unable to locate the fuel pump fuse or relay, or if you are having trouble identifying the correct components, it is recommended to consult a mechanic for assistance.
the manual will still be available from a auto technical book shop
go google and type in --workshop manual for vw 1996 and if there is a pdf version ,it will be around 200 pages long
Disconnect the small purple wire at the starter and see if that stops it. If not, replace the starter. If it does you will have to test the rest of the starter circuit.
When the van was parked, was it in an area where mice or other rodents could get to it? If so, check for chewed wires near top of engine compartment and under van near starter.
Wow! Sounds like you've got a winner there! Ok, first, the mechanic you brought the van to... If he can't fix it because there's no check engine light on, leading me to believe he's not a mechanic, more like a guy who gets dirty falling down in the shop a lot! Sorry but that's annoying to me! Time to look in to a new shop! The good news is that it sounds like you're doing pretty well on your own! To the problem(s)... First, have you verified that your battery is good? Remove it, bring it to a parts store and have them load test it. Next, verify your battery cables are good, terminals clean and tight, free of corrosion and where they attach, starter, fuse box, grounds are also clean and tight. Also, have you done a tune up lately? All of these issues can make your van do what you've described and before you start throwing money at the van, start withe the basics I've listed. You're ecm doesn't sound like it has any faults at all. Start with what I've suggested. If you have no improvements, I have a lot more we can try! Don't give up and don't feel bad! I've had a similar vehicle code telling me the crank sensor was bad, it was just a set of plugs! Good luck! Please let me know how you make out!
Make sure to check the engine compartment fuses and the inside fusebox, if all the fuses look good then try to unhook the battery and then connect it back on and start the van and see if this helps. the radio is it asking for a code, if this radio has antitheft then you will need to install the code to make it work, look at manual and it will tell you how to do this. the code is entered using the preset staition buttons, there should be a card in the glovebox with the radio code if it has antitheft. if you find no bad fuses then you may have short out the cluster jumping it, but most of the time it just needs a fuse or reseting by removing neg battery terminal for about 2min, good day let me know the outcome.
2004 vw 2000sdi caddy van wont start some mornings you need to wind it over before it fires, immediately after it fires you can switch off ignition and it will start first time and continue to start all day. vw dealer says no fault codes present. gloplugs renewed, new battery, fuel problem? if the headlight switch does not shut the lights off replace the switch. unplugging the lights or disconnecting the battery is another option to turn off
