Have a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl. When Car is cold starts fine. Once i run around shut car off will not start.(this does not happen all the time) If i keep trying to start it i can smell gas. then i let it sit for a little bit it will start right up. once this happens the service engine light will go on but in a few hrs sometimes days the light will go off. I have changed the two coils thinking they where bad.. but it is still the same problem .

SOURCE: service engine light on 2002 mitsubishi galant

it could be the spark plugs, at least that is what it was for mine, if you have over 50k miles without a spark plug change i highly suggest one, also a oil /transmission change would be great for your car too if you haven't done those reciently. I would also suggest using a higher grade gas, sometimes this fixes the trick too.
If you try all those and still experiencing hard transitions please let me know and i'll try a more indepth analysis on your car.
Thanks jyotsna.

Has it overheated lately?
My wife overheated our Galant and it just stopped working, it cranks but that's it.
I pulled the sparkplugs and found them wrapped in a gewey jelly like substance. Like an oil/antifreeze combo.
I am going to replace the entire motor for $1000 as taking it to the mechanics to theorize and practice may cost more.

SOURCE: transmission delayed engagement at cold start

Depending on how Cold it is where you are, The cold will effect the Operation of the Tranny. I am pretty sure that your Tranny is Fine, Just Really Cold. Depending also on where you live, I use Valvoline Quick Change to service my Vehicles when I am on the Road. Have never had a Problem with them. On the Fluid, They make so many Different Kinds now adays that it is hard to Choose. Look in the Back of your Owners Manual and Use what is Suggested in there.

Question: where did you buy the new crank position sensor? I had the exact same problem with my 2004 Nissan Altima and bought new crank position sensor from one of the auto parts store. Put it in and same problem. I was baffled. Finally decided to get the crank position sensor directly from the dealer. Fixed the problem. This was my experience, not sure if your case will be the same.

2002 Mitsubishi Galant starts when cold but once you turn it off it won't start again....sometimes it'll start after it cools down and sometimes I have to check the sparks plugs and then it'll start...

I went through a the same problem with a Toyota it would start perfect in morning and if I shut it off it wouldn't start hot anyway I would be willing to be it's the ect(engine coolant temperature) sensor. If your car has 2 it's the one for the computer

I changed the 02 Sensors on my 03 Mitsubishi Galant do I need to reset anything on my car? It turns on fine but idles low when put in gear and shuts off.

Its a hot start issue.

Can be related to low fuel pressure or problem with crank sensor.

Also it can be weak battery or starter.

But possibilities are to be inspected to confirm what exactly it is.------

2002 galant will start up fine cold and run for 20 min, after hot soak will not start, back fires through intake

Yes your 4 cyl engine uses direct spark with a coil over each spark plug.
And the computer controls the firing of the plugs and injector pulse.
The problem could be the crank or cam sensor, or the wiring harness, but in most cases the check engine light should be on and a code set.
You might want to check the computer for codes, then try the cam sensor.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl ES underhood squeal on right side

The probable causes are: 1. The drive belts are slipping. 2. The drive pulleys for some engine accessories are misaligned. 3. You have turned the steering wheel to the limits. 4. The drive belts are loose.5. Your brake drum backing plates are rubbing against the brake drum. The brakes also might be a problem. check the brake drums/discs. Finally check your wheel and wheel alignment.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl ES underhood squeal on right side

Be gentle with my rating. I am a long ways away. It sounds like a fan belt. You should pop the hood next time and see how it sounds when you have the squeeling going on. Fan belts will squeel until the get warmed up and then stop because the heat makes them grab the way they are ment too. Let me know, Raz

How do i fix a misfire on cyl 1? its starting to shake a little bit when i start the car but when i drive it for a couple of mintues it stops, what do i do?

when the engine is cold .do a compression test. change the spark plugs, wiring and then see what it is like.there could also be an injector problem.scope the waveform on the injectors and make sure the 4 cylinders are the same
