If you have over 75,000 miles and never replaced the transmission fluid and you do not have a engine light on, you need a new transmission.

2003 Mercury Mountaineer 4.6, V8.

You need a good person with a pro grade scan tool computer. That should give a hint as it is likely to be sensor related. Change the fuel filter anyway.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer?
It's under the vehicle in the fuel line from the tank to the engine.

My truck shuts off when i starts it sometimes. it will start and then when i put it in reverse it will die. i have a new fuel filter and get regular oil changes and i cant figure out what is wrong

When you say can't figure out what is wrong !!

You never will,if you don't know the vehicles
systems and test them.

Just a possible item to have checked,
would be the Transmission Range Sensor,
on the drivers side of trans between the
case and oil pan

I think you need a repair shop

You never have to mention oil or any fluids, as
they have nothing to do with vehicle repairs

My 2004 mercury mountaineer started leaking fluid and I think that it may be the transmission fluid, because it started smoking. What do I do?

OIL WILL BE BLACK IN COLOR! TRANSMISSION FLUID IS RED! IT MIGHT BE LEAKING ONTO THE EXHAUST! RECOMMEND HAVING A SHOP CHECK IT OUT FOR YOU!

I need a new transmission in my 2004 Mercury Mountaineer V8 AWD, how much should I expect to spend?

Replacing a transmission can run $1,800-$3,500
I'm thinking closer to $2800 for you because it is a more sophisticated AWD model, perhaps more. Hope that is informative enough for you.

Please rate me, thanks!

you probably should change the transmission fluid and filter with that many miles on it.
