While driving the transmission jerked and stopped. Shifting into N it began to move forward slightly and then stopped. This happened all within about 3 - 5 minutes going up hill. It will not go into any gear, not even reverse. Once cool the van once again goes into gear forward & reverse. But except to move it forward without gas assistance I only rolled forward about five feet. I was told by a mechanic that it is the gear and chain set that attaches the engine to the transmission. Is this possible?? There is a fair amount of noise radiating from the plate over the engine/trans. segment on the drive side of the van.

2008 Hyundai Accent automatic transmission, goes into reverse but no forward driving gears

This could be due to a variety of reasons such as a faulty shift solenoid, internal mechanical failure with the transmission, or an issue with the transmission fluid.

It's possible that the car's transmission was damaged when it was stuck in the snow drift. The slight pause shifting from reverse to drive that you mentioned earlier could also be an indication of a transmission problem. I would recommend taking your car to a qualified mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue. You might get lucky-- but without a visual inspection, you may just hear the intimidating prognosis of a transmission problem.

In the meantime, you can try holding your left foot on the brake while you shift into reverse. Then, as soon as you feel the transmission engage, gently depress the gas pedal with your right foot. This will eliminate the forward roll problem .

Why won't 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport go right after shifting into drive or when at stop wont take right back off. When does it jerks really hard. Will drive right away if shift into 3rd.

There are a few possible reasons why your 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Sport might not go right after shifting into drive or when at a stop won't take right back off and jerks really hard when it does. Transmission problems: The transmission is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels. If the transmission is faulty, it can cause a variety of problems, including difficulty shifting gears, jerking, and stalling. Clutch problems: The clutch is responsible for engaging and disengaging the transmission from the engine. If the clutch is faulty, it can cause a variety of problems, including difficulty shifting gears, jerking, and stalling. Engine problems: The engine is responsible for providing power to the transmission. Here are some tips to help prevent these problems from happening in the future: Have your transmission serviced regularly: The transmission fluid should be changed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Have your clutch serviced regularly: The clutch should be inspected and adjusted according to the manufacturer's recommendations. 2003 mercury grand marquis when shifting from park to drive car wont engage as in it seems to be in neutral slightly rolling forward move shift lever to reverse and it will go into reverse sometimes

Check transmission fuid level first. If its low I recommend LUCAS transmission fluid to fill it. If that does not fix it then it could be loose shifting linkage and will need to be tightened. To tell would require a second person to either shift or watch transmission cable/rod to see if it is working properly. With vehicle drive tires off the ground you can also try shifting it manually from the linkage on side of transmission case. It could ultimately be a blown tranny where on the inside the chain or belt has stretched or broken. Some transmissions have adjusting screw on outside of case or within transmission pan. Also it could be worn or stripped gears or sprockets inside in which case it would need a new tranny or rebuild.

Why would a vehicle in reverse move forward

The question is a little vague but I think I know what your referring to. All modern automatic transmissions have torque converters. This is the device that connects the engine to the transmission. All vehicle manufacturers like the trans to be nice and smooth shifting. That's great but it does come with some minor drawbacks. If you are facing slightly down hill and you put your car in reverse but do not step on the gas slightly I can guarantee that you will indeed roll forward. You can eliminate that issue by holding your left foot on the brake while you shift into reverse. Then, as soon as you feel the trans engage, gently depress the gas pedal with your right foot and it will eliminate that forward roll problem.

Why is car abruptly jolting to a stop in reverse and not moving?

Sounds like the transmission is shifting into both reverse and a forward gear at the same time. Time for a tranny overhaul. But first check the transmission fluid level.

Jaguar transmission problems

Depends in the mileage since the transmission was last serviced. It sounds like low pressure from the pump. It could be just a filter. You did not say where the leaking seal is, but a leaking seal will not fix itself.

Buick rendezvous gear shifts just fine but car won't move. No grinding shifting is smooth and flawless vehicle just will not move forward whether it is in drive, 1st, 2nd, or third gear. Reverses and

Sounds as if forward driving gears are shot. Different gears make vehicle move in reverse. I would ask if transmission fluid level when checked is in the operation range or full.

1990 Suzuki Escudo 4 wheel drive

As far as I know the procedure should go something like this...

Stop the vehicle, engage the parking brake and if applicable, get out and turn the hubs on the front wheels from Free, to Lock.(You may not have these on a Suzuki, they may be auto-lockers)

Get back in the vehicle and put the transmission shift selector into Neutral.

If you have a manual transfer case, move the selector-shaft to 4x4-High, or 4x4-Low -- whichever is desired. Now, putting the vehicle in gear with the transfer case is sometimes somewhat difficult. As long as the vehicle's transmission is in neutral, don't worry, the gears inside the transfer case are big and beefy -- Don't be afraid to be rough -- Again as long as the transmission is in neutral. You may also have to disengage the parking brake and slightly let the vehicle roll forward or back with your foot-brake to get the Transfer case to lock into place.

Once 4x4 of the selected High, Or Low range is selected, usually indicated by the vehicle jerking slightly with a slightly loud clank/thud. Move the Transmission selector out of neutral into your desired gear (Drive if Automatic, if Manual, whichever gear you pull out from). and voila! You should now be in 4-Wheel-Drive.

To disengage 4-Wheel-Drive. Just reverse the steps.
