I have a 92 olds 88. The battery died so I replaced the battery and altenator at the same time. I went about 10 miles and the belt broke(but did not lose time). I got the belt fixed and the car ran fine for about a month. I started having trouble with the car not accelerating and then juststalling out. The first time or two I just jumped it off, but now I can't get it to even start. The engine will turn over and occasionally make a puff noise but I can't seem to pinpoint the trouble area.

It sounds like you are having a problem with your 1992 Oldsmobile 88. The issue you described, where the car is not accelerating and stalling out, could be caused by a number of things. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. Check the fuel system. A faulty fuel pump or clogged fuel filter could cause the engine to stall out. Check the fuel pump and fuel filter and replace them if necessary.
  2. Check the ignition system. A faulty spark plug or ignition coil could cause the engine to misfire and stall out. Check the spark plugs and ignition coils and replace them if necessary.
  3. Check the fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure can cause the engine to stall out. Check the fuel pressure and make sure it is within the manufacturer's specifications.
  4. Check the engine temperature. If the engine is overheating, it could cause the engine to stall out. Check the engine temperature and make sure it is within the normal range.
I recommend having a mechanic diagnose the problem in order to determine the cause and recommend the appropriate repair. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Buying a repairable, salvage, or wrecked Ford F250 from https://abetter.bid/en/car-finder/type-a... is often a more cost effective and reliable option than purchasing a 1992 Oldsmobile 88. The Ford F250 is available in a wide variety of models, so it's easy to find one that fits your needs, whether you're looking for a work truck or a recreational vehicle. Additionally, the F250 has a reputation for being well-made and reliable, so you can count on it to last for years to come. Furthermore, if you buy a salvage or wrecked Ford F250 you can save a considerable amount of money compared to purchasing a new one. The parts in these vehicles are often in good condition, and you can often find the parts you need for a fraction of the cost of new ones. Finally, the Ford F250 is a popular and recognizable pickup truck, so it's not difficult to find a mechanic who is familiar with the vehicle. All of these factors make it an attractive option for anyone looking for an affordable, reliable, and long-lasting work or recreational vehicle.

SOURCE: cutlass supreme wont start

It could possibly be the starter, but before you get that far make sure the Battery cables are connected very tight. If loose the car won't start or do anything. Also make sure the battery cable is grounded.

SOURCE: 98 Olds 88 starting problem

Update--after getting car back from 3rd shop, it ran flawlessly for about a week or ten days. Then started doing it again. I decided to do some more troubleshooting myself. While trying to track down the components of the fuel pump electrical circuit, I did quite a bit of wire wiggling at the firewall and inside behind the glove box (the location of the fuel pump relay on this car). I had a buddy turn key to "on" while listening for the fuel pump relay to click. When he did, the fuel pump ran 2-3 seconds just like its supposed to. The car started right up, and has ran since---two weeks now. My problem definitely now looks like a short in the wiring somewhere in the fuel pump circuitry. Next time it does it, I'll try to further narrow down the area of the problem. I found this one basically by accident.

SOURCE: 87 f250 drained brand new battery

I would first have the alternator checked by an auto electrician to ensure it is working correctly and is providing the correct volume of current. It may be faulty and when driving you will be drawing battery power instead of power from the alternator to run the electrics. This will drain the battery.

Alternators do not last forever and if you are still running the original unit it is likely to be on it's last legs and you will need a replacement unit.

He timing belt broke. mechanic says replacement wont help because the car has over 200'000 miles on it. he says we need a new engine. do you agree?

Let's see what went on in the mechanic's head...

Timing belt broke. Likely that means your engine also has bent valves, because that's what happens when the timing belt breaks while the engine is running.

At 200k miles, likely the rings are pretty worn. Does it use much oil? How was the compression before the timing belt broke? Low?

At 200k miles, I'd be thinking that once it's open, replace the bearings, too. They're likely worn out.

Yeah, sounds like a replacement engine to me, too... Cheaper than doing everything to rebuild yours.

It's difficult to say exactly what the problem is since you had replaced the engine. After the engine was replaced were all systems connected correctly and readjusted for best performance? It's a shame you replaced the engine. You could have repaced the head and the timing belt on the old engine for less $$.

the a/c belt or your a/c should'nt lock your motor as not to start or 'turn over' yout altenator may have went bad, or the battery may have went bad. the only way to know for sure is to have them tested. autozone or an advance auto parts checks both for free. suggest you remove the battery and take it to your choice of the 2 if the battery checks 'good' install it and drive the car to the nearest of the 2 and have the altenator checked for free. either one will not replace the altenator, but at least you will know what's bad. if it turns out to be the altenator, you can drive it with bad altenator w/lights off for about 10 miles.call your mechanic and he or she may be able to meet you at auto parts store and do the replacement there as i do myself. thank you for choosing fixya.com and i look forward to assisting you in the future!

have you checked the altenator? is the belt on the altenator? most places like auto zone will check it for free. advance auto also checks them free. sounds like after it dies and you park it for 8 hours the battery picks up enough to start it and run it for what?30mins top? with lights on 15mins or less? you're altenator most likely bad or belts loose or gone. hope this helps!!

Power steering

I have recently had to work on 3 different jeep cherokees 92, 98, 99 and have encountered a similar problem on the 92. The serpentine belt broke and needed replacement, it connects all the major functions in your motor including your power steering, fan, water pump and yes altenator...after replacing your new powersteering pump (which by the way is a real pain in the **** with having to mount the new pulley...)
The jeep wouldnt start and I also had a drained battery so I had to use a jump box to get it started...there is no such thing as a safety for power steering...
