A 1998 Buick Regal GS. 83,000 miles. For the last 30,000 miles, off and on, the engine shuts off when the turn signal is in use. I went to complain on the NHTSA site. Eight other Regal owners complained of exactly the same symptom. A few replaced the turn signal...to no avail. A few seemed to get better results by replacing the ignition switch. What do you think? Is there a silent recall for this very dangerous feature???

A week ago I put $800. into my 1998 Buick Regal. There has been intermittent problems with the electrical (windows, door locks, warning lights, rearview mirror lights), but last night the car would stop running everytime I used either directional. Does anyone know how to fix this or why it is happening?

I have a 1998 Buick Regal GS and experience the dead short problem when using the turn signals. I have started dealing with Dealer and specialist mechanic and neither appear to be aware that this has happened before. What does GM :Buick have to say about this and what do I do. The thought of starting to replace parts that may or may not solve the problem is scary.

    I would appreciate help

My 2004 Buick Regal had this problem too. When I try to turn on the car, all the lights flash and flicker on the dash. When I try to turn the signal lights the engine dies. Has ANYONE been able to have it fixed? I'm scared to drive my car too!

Dies when left turn signal is used and other electrical gremlins

  • ed2005 Apr 23, 2009

My 1999 Buick Regal GS had the same problem where it would intermittently not start with indicator lights flashing on the dash. When you use the turn signals, the engine would quit leaving no error codes on the scanner tool. After replacing the wire harness to the ignition switch the problem was solved. The wire harness controls the turn signals as well as engine.

Maybe a solution.  Are you sure that its because your using your turn signal?  Does this occur while moving or while sitting idle?

My car engine would turn off while sitting idle at a traffic light.  Many people turn their signals on while idle instead of before they get to the light or stop sign.  There is a problem with the engine getting too hot while stopped and then turning off.  Make sure you're put your signal on before stopping and see if that makes a difference.  If it keeps turning off while just sitting it may be the engine.

However this might be something different and if so that very weird.

I had the ignition switch replaced in my 98 Buick Regal and it has worked fine since. I cringed the first few times I turned on the signal lights but it is working fine now.

The dealer would not tell me that this was the problem - I had to request that they install the switch. I was willing to take the chance - I had to have my car.

I have a 98 Regal LS with the same problem. Took it to one dealer and they said it was the multifunction switch which cost about $600 before labor and tests. Decided to go with another dealer (one I used before) and they fixed it by replacing the ignition switch. Total cost was about half. Car runs great with 201,500 miles on it.

You could have a short in the wiring harness in the stearing collum. I had one on mine and it would shut off turning corners.

Ive got a 98 regal LS and i believe its the main computer board on my car thats malfunctioning 1 out of every 3 or 4 times i turn the car on my "Anti lock" and "emergency Brake" light turns on and my steering wheel gets a bit tighter to turn it will go away after i turn the car off and on again? also my front right turn signal socket eats the plastic of my bulbs constantly i'm looking to replace just the socket if anyone knows of a place i can get this at? Another weird problem I've discovered was when i turn the cars ignition off after driving and i leave the turn signal on an "On" position my dash board makes a buzzing sound with my speedometer gauges going all the way to 120mph and my rpm gauge also going all the way over? has anyone had these problems before? again my vehicle is a 98 Buick regal LS with appx 100k miles on it looking to replace mainly my front right turn signal socket for under $25? dealer is charging almost $40 for this part.

1998 buick regal gs heat blows hot on passenger side and cold on the driver side.

Same problem on my 98 Regal GS; remove glove box, locate the blend door actuator, (black odd shaped box with metal "ring"). Remove the box and manually turn the blend door shaft it was attached to. If you get cold air, it's the actuator you removed. About 30-40 dollars.

2001 Buick Regal cuts off while driving at times also won't start

The ignition switch on that model is rated @ 50amps. When I was driving my 2001 Regal LS (at 120,000 miles) and used the turn signal, the engine would die, when I switched the turn signal off, the engine ran. So I replaced the ignition switch, and all is well.
