100 degrees is the normal operating temperature for the motor. If it goes higher than that, the thermostate needs to be replaced. The temperature will be higher on the highway because the engine is producing more heat energy due to the higher load on the motor. Diesels idle cooler and the engine will cool down at idle or lower speeds. That is why it is best not to idle your car for long periods of time because this will cause deposits in the engine and glaze the cylinders. The engine is working normal from what you described and there is no reason to worry. I hope this helped.

Engine temperature coolant sensor

Your description indicates the engine/coolant thermostat is faulty and allowing at least some coolant to continue circulating so at higher road speeds the engine is over cooled.

VW passat coolant warning light on

There's a level sensor plugged into the bottom of the coolant reservoir. Unplug it and clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. If that doesn't do the trick, replace the sensor.

I have a 1982 242 volvo dl the temp gauge goes up to the red line at speed of 60mph or higher slow down or stop comes right down I do not what to start putting all new parts in if it is a easy fix

Well, it could be a clogged radiator, stuck thermostat, bogus fan clutchbut it is disconcerting that it heats up at highway speeds and cools down when slowing down. This really sounds like a blown head gasket to me. Combustion gas is seeping into the coolant and overheating it. I would have a reliable shop check your coolant for the prescence of carbon monoxide. They can check it w/ a simple test kit. There should be no CO in the coolant.

My mechanic in our town did a quick computer check. Car computer indicated a low level of antifreeze, he topped it up, cleared all messages off the car computer and said to watch the the heat guage for any further irregularities. I'll keep an eye on it, love the car, great mileage fun to drive.

2002 vw jetta tdi - problem with rpm gauge?

Hi, Did you notice the motor actually reving higher when the tachometer was reading a higher rpm.. If it was it could be your transmission slipping.. Set your cruise control and listen to your motor while the tachometer starts moving erratically.. Good Luck
