If you made no changes to the fuel injection computer to tell it that the displacement has changed from boring the cylinders 30 over, it will not know to add more fuel from the injectors. Engine displacement is programmed in at the factory.
overheated motors damage the rings and bore of the engine
it will blow head gaskets and warp/ crack heads
very rarely will it damage the timing chain
run a compression test first and it is possible that there is valve damage ( burnt valves )
you have to take the radiator cover, radiator and lines, and the water pump off to get to the timing set. its a 3 piece set that comes with gaskets for it and the water pump. once u replace it, u should have a mechanic set the timing with a timing light.
Never have seen a bad head gasket on a 3800. Your problem could be the upper intake manifold had gone bad and leaked all of the coolant into the combustion chamber. If you run any engine too hot, you will need to replace the engine as excessive heat will warp cylinder bores, heads , valves etc. Seek a good used engine and never drive a overheated engine unless you can afford a replacement engine.
They put two different motors in the Explorer 4.0 overhead valve with vehicle Id code of( X) and the 4.0 single overhead Cam and a vehicle code of (E) If your vehicle has a E in the vehicle Id number I would replace the upper intake manifold gaskets. This particular Motor is very prone for the the upper Intake manifold gasket drying out and causing a large vacuum leak. The symptoms are engine will not Idle on dies on cold start up and after the engines reaches operating Temp idles fine .replace the upper intakes gaskets and I am sure you"ll be in great shape. if car has a oil cooler that uses coolant to lower oil temp. check that, if not you might want to get a coolant psi tester and try locating leak that way. but my expierence is that a head gasket problems cause this also if block was bored and machined that could also be the issue.
sounds to me that the rings on the piston are worn out with the engine warmed up the cylinder expands a little causing blow by take the oil cap off and see if there is excessive blow by
