I have a 90 dakota and its making a clunking noise in the rear end. When I jack it up the rear tires will rotate back and forth at least an inch before moving the drive line. When I put it in gear it clunks and also when stopping fast. Also when put in gear the rear end will shift up or down.

I would start by replacing U-Joints. They are really common issues when it comes to clunking noises. I'd start there.

My 1998 Explorer (165,000 mi.)makes a loud rubbing noise when taking off turning or backing up turning. Clutch plates in rear carrier have been replaced (no change in noise). Front drive shaft removed

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "rubbing" sound. If it's a squeaking type of rubbing, you are more than likely hearing the bushings. The Ford Explorer is known to have the bushings wear down so much that any torque or twist will make this sound. It'll cost a few hundred to fix, mainly because if you'r going to fix one, you should just fix them all.

What is causeing loose play in my steeringwheel when i turn it left or right?

If there is no shaking or clunking you can probably rule out tie rods or ball joints, have your steering box checked for a worn or damaged worm gear, this can be adjusted

Jack up rear tires off ground. hold tire at 3 and 9 o clock position rock back and forth sharply. look for play in wheel and listen for clunking. May be wheel bearings or bushings.

I hear a loud clunking noise coming from the rear of the truck every time i take off from a stop

Three things: Either the rear brakes are releasing, causing a clunk, try service and adjust rear brakes. If not, go to the drive shaft, check the u-joints and/or jack up the rear of the truck and rotate your tires by hand to see if there is a clunk in the rear end itself.

This vehicle has new tires and still rear of vehicle seems to squirm back and forth at any speed but notice it mostly above 50 ! It also does it when the cruise control is engaged and disengaged.

Sounds like either a bent rim or loose or worn wheel bearings, if you can jack the back end up, just so the tire is off the ground, grasp the top and bottom of the tire and try to rock it back and forth, if it clunks you've got bearing troubles.

CLUNKING NOISE DRIVERS SIDE ONLY WHEN BRAKING

look under the seat for a bottle under it -

have your front end looked at -
Check your wheels - make sure - 100% that they are not loose by getting out the tire tool and tightening them just a little bit - or a lot if real loose.

2001 2wd, v6 tracker LT, 110K miles; Grinding, clunking nosie

If it sounds like a rumble from back wheels it may be the rear end going out. Mine has been replaced twice with used rear end. You should be able to confirm it by looking at the rear tires both sides of tire for an oil leak or wet spot on tire or rim.

Clunk noise from rear of truck

How about the U joint? If it's shot, you will hear a clunk when u start up. You probably already know, but jack up the back of the truck (both wheels off the ground) make sure u blocked front wheels front and back so it can't roll, use jack stands so u don't get squished, truck in neutral, e- brake off, climb under, grab driveshaft and twist back and forth to see if there is slop or play in the rear universal joint. Let me know what u find. Good Luck, and don't get squished (or squashed). countrycurt0
