1988 Volvo 740 wagon missing power steering part

Got a problem. My buddy bought this car couple days ago and I've been helping him get it going. It's a good running car but it has a problem with the power steering. Someone (i.e. the previous owner) has removed a fitting and possibly a section of line that connects to the drivers side control valve. I dont have any experience with these quirky little cars and would hate to just go ahead and assume it's just a return port. Oh, and by the way is this a metric pipe fitting? If so what size?

Spray starting fluid in the intake manifold with the throat open. Then try to start. if it starts briefly then you have a fuel pump or fuel relay issue. If it does not start after spraying starter fluid then you have a spark issue. Check the ingnition stage module on the inner fender behind the air cleaner and/or swap the radio suppression relay on the radiator fluid reservior.

SOURCE: car will start but won't stay running

Hi!
I'm presuming the B23 engine? Have you checked fuel pressure valve located on the inlet manifold, are your plugs getting soaked in fuel?
If not try looking at the Fuel relay in the block situated behind the ash tray below the Radio.
It might be easier for you to access this by taking out the coin tray, flip the cover plate off the cigar lighter it will reveal 2 screws, take that out and the tray then you'll see a whole lot more relays.
There are different types/colours I'm guessing your could be Blue but there are white ones too.Try Jiggling them carefully then crank the engine if it runs but poorly replace.
You must replace with correct one even if it is Blue some have Copper Lugs others steel and they are different.
Good Luck!

SOURCE: 1990 volvo 740 wagon shuts off while driving

sounds like you have a computer glitch. i would take it to any auto shop and pay 50 bucks so they can take a look at your e.c.u. (engine control unit) we had a similar problem a few years ago with our 1990 volvo 740 gle 2.3l station wagon. it was a glitch with the computer. got a mixed signal with the mass air flow sensor.

1992 volvo 740 wagon. want to know what to use to get the top starter bolt out - can't seem to find the right como

I bought a Craftsman socket at OSH hardware. Very shallow 6-point socket with a universal joint built into it. I think it was 18mm but I don't have it handy at the moment so check the size. That socket with a couple of extensions worked like a charm.

Can I change the fuel pump and relay on my 1988 Volvo wagon 740 myself or do I have to have a mechanic do it?

dropping fuel tank is not that hard, drive up on ramps for clearance and unbolt straps, be careful not to break fuel line when lowering tank, good luck

Power steering works hard at low speeds parking etc put then seems ok when you get going maybe rack and pinion

The VOLVO 740 does not have speed sensitive power steering, so is a little harder to turn when going slow.but is very light when doing over 100mph.

Power steering fluid leaks quickly out 1989 Volvo 740 GLE wagon

The most obvious places are the Power steering rack itself - at each end, and the hoses that are attatched to it.
A leak at the pump is easily spotted.

Hoses are cheaper to replace than seals on the rack (which may require a new unit)

Looking for socket turn ligth

Those are Bosch sockets which Mercedes and Volvo loved, but which are a royal pain. The socket is a dual-filament socket  probably combining the tail light AND turn signal. The others are all single-filament sockets. They are NOT interchangeable. First determine whether the socket is really at fault. Sometimes the contact points don't quite connect with the long busses in the tail light assembly. I have successfully cleaned mine. Maybe you can reform the contacts to make better contact. If not,  Ebay has what you want under Volvo parts. The sockets for the 240 and 740 are the same, an d will fit either sedans or wagons. Voluparts in Atlanta Georgia has them too. Any junk yard with Volvos will have these sockets.  I bought a bunch of spares for $10
