I have a 2004 grand prix 3800 engine non turbo. Engine was eratic at cruise with rpms at 1200-2000. rpms would lope 2-300 rpms.
I Changed air and fuel filter, and cleaned the throttle body. also checked the coil block connector for corrosion. Started the car with the mass airflow sensor hose disconnected by accident. The engine immediately went to limp mode. I had check engine light on, reduced power warning and traction control warning. reconnected the hose, no change.
I disconnected the battery for 20 min started the car and everything was normal. no dash lights or warnings. Drove the car for about 10 min at speeds up to 60 mph. engine still loped but ran ok. Suddenly all the warning lights returned including traction control and went to limp mode. disconnected the bat, restarted, and everythings normal.
Any ideas whats next to check?

I had a problem with my 2006 explorer flashing all lof the lights on the dash board and it wound up being the battery the voltage was low and I had a whole slew of lights on so try that if you were to disconnect the altenator with the car running and it dies you mostlikley have a bad battery.I had a problem with my 2006 explorer flashing all lof the lights on the dash board and it wound up being the battery the voltage was low and I had a whole slew of lights on so try that if you were to disconnect the altenator with the car running and it dies you mostlikley have a bad battery.

try taking the oxygen sensor out of the manifold by the firewall and take it for a ride,it sounds like u have a plugged catalytic converter,by removing the sensor your givin the pressure somewhere to escape,if u do have to replace the cat converter i would suggest putting a factory converter on it because if u dont, the check engine light will come on due to the fact that aftermarket converters only have three of the four precious metals required to work properly thats why they are cheaper
yes it could be. have fuel pump pressure tested, fuel pump pressure should be. (key on engine off) 1999 to 2000--with egr--41 to 47 psi without egr--52 to 58 psi,
You need to read the codes. Get an OBD2 code scanner from your local auto parts store,, then read the code stored. Then you will have a better idea what is going on.
I had a simular problem on my car, but it is'nt a Pontiac, it's an Mazda 323. I solved the problem to be that the Idle air control valve was dirty, and therefore sticking. This caused the engine to idle eratically and sometimes stall. Sometimes it would even stall whilst changing gear. On most cars the idle air valve is located at the top of the engine, normally near the air filter. And to be honest is very easy to service. It's just a matter of disconnecting and cleaning it with carburetter cleaner. You probably know this already lol, I'm not sure if you mean this when you say sensor. Hope this was of some help! :)
