My '94 honda accord won't shift out of park unless i put the key in the gear shift. The lights start dimming, and it takes off slower than normal. 2 months ago i had the same problem and I got a new battery and alternator. Then, the mechanic said it was an electrical problem and fixed it.

Usually associate with a bad or disconnected Speedometer cable. Rumors have it also associated to fuses on the Hazard lights/Turn signal.

You seem to have two (2) separate problems one may be a BAD brake light switch this switch is mounted at the top of BRAKE pedal and control the locking mechanism on gear shifter(safety component-for example if a kid is sitting in seat with vehicle running he/she will NOT be able to put vehicle in gear without stepping on brake). The other problem is a BAD shifter cable-this cable moves the selector in the transmission when you move shift knob. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA

If all the connection and power supplies to instrument cluster are ok,I suspect that the speedometer or instrument cluster is faulty but before you replace it, make sure the gear inside the transmission that drives the VSS is in good.

push key in turn on and off push key in work switch off and on .if dont release you probably going to have to take out the ignition switch. make sure your car is all the way in park.
