35i 2007 coupe. 2 days ago started car cold in the morning. The engine was juddering & knocking like it was running on 3 cylinders.i drove the car for about 100 yards, yellow warning light came on so then stopped, then turned off the engine, waited a couple of minutes then started car with no more problems during that day. Yesterday from cold exactly the same thing happened, so again stopped car, switched off engine, left it a couple of minutes then started car with no problems during the day. Today from cold tried the same thing happened but this time the fault did not rectify itself. lots of smoke from exhausts and smelled like it was running rich. So have taken it to BMW which was about 12 miles away going through about 1/4 of a tank of petrol. Can you tell me what the problem may be as it sound like it could be really expensive.

SOURCE: 325i BMW, 2003 (Automatic) Fuel Pump/Filter or

your camshaft position sensor may be going bad. usually with an old car it tend to go bad. The top of sensor can be covered or gumed up with grease, oil, dirt and cause it not to detect the flywheel turning. Camshaft sensor send single to your DME to deliver fuel and sparks to you engine. If camshaft sensor goes bad it will seem like your fuel pump and ignition coil is bad even-though they are good. Faulty camshaft sensor may caused you to have this issue and problems such as sometime it run good and all of sudden it shut off, sometime its start good and others time is doesn't start. Once the sensor goes bad, the car will not run. There are two Sensor one for the fuel and one for the sparks, I would replace both sensor because soon or later if it will go bad, it will leave you stranded although if you replace one you might as well replace the other. Check the coil and test using the light or volts tester to see you getting power to the coil, next check if your fuel pump is working, fuel pump will not stay running unless the sensor sense the flywheel is turning from your camshaft sensor. next time when your car does not start, check if you getting spark and fuel. Both sensor will cost you around 130 bucks. assuming your DME, fuel pump, coil, wires, etc... is working. keep me update and I will try to walk you through. btw stop by at any auto part store and pick yourself up Haynes auto repair book for your car, its a great tools and investment to have for your next repair work if you plan to keep your car and get to know the heart of it. good luck and i hope that help some.

Sounds like you have a small bit of dirt or grit in the fuel system when accelerating it is drawn with enough force to cut off the fuel supply then is released when engine at Idle.
1 run liquid fuel line/injector cleaner in 1 tank
2 check fuel lines for debris
3 change fuel filters
4 have fuel tank flushed
here is trouble shooting order less expense to greater.

SOURCE: I have a petrol smell in the boot of my BMW 320

replace the two rubber gas lines where they connect to the fuel rail, they're about 2" long. If you don't.....it will catch fire and we'll all see on on the side of the road in the carB-Q.

2002 Dodge Stratus R/T Coupe Will Not Start

Yes, I've seen a lot of comments on Mitsubishis also. Enough to know I don't want one. Too late to return it? Or determined to keep it?
Check for spark, check fuel pressure. Do you hear the pump turn on for 2 or 3 seconds with key on, not start? Have you tried the resetting with the pump temp sensor again?

2000 Nissan Sentra 1.8L. High mileage (330,000 plus miles). May take 5min or longer to start cold- acts like it's not firing one or more cylinders. Once it starts there's a big cloud like it was flooded....

Sounds like either it has a bad valve, or worn rings. With the mileage, I would suspect it's just plain getting worn out, when the engine warms up it internal tolerances are better then cold.

Engine knocking at the first start in the morning

Personally, if it's only a second or 2 when cold, I wouldn't worry about it, other than be sure not to rev it when first started. I've heard many engine do the same, and last a long time. If manual says 10w30, then that's what I'd run in it. What you have to think about, is when you go from 10w, to 20w oil, it's thicker and will take a little longer to get to those critical areas when cold. It may protect a little better when warm or hot, but start-up cold, is more important, as you want the oil to be able to flow fast when cold. If manual recommends 10w30, go with that. I usually will use 10w30, in winter, then 10w40 in summer. Gives you added protection on hotter days, but does not take away from cold start protection.

I have a 1994 Subaru Legacy and It has started making a "knocking sound". Cked the oil, it was OK

knocks when cold ( Start ), then sort of diminish or disappears when warming up ???

Knocking goes faster when accelerating when cold ???

If Yes, then Piston knocking on the wall of the cylinder . The sound disappears as the engine is getting warmer it dilates and the gap gets smaller.

If this just started,

1. Put quality oil & filter ( Mobile Full Synthetic Oil & Mobile Oil Filter or Purolator )

2. Do not put cleaning agents mixed with oil.

3. Personaly i've put "Restore" Engine Restorer & Lubricant in cars with more then 200 000 km and the results are amazing. But only "Restore". My Volvo is at close to 300 000 km, and it runs great. It's not a cleaning agent.

By experience if the knocking just started you can put an easy extra 100 000 km on the engine before a rebuilt. Quality Oil & let the engine warm up ( 3 mins ).
