You are probably right about it being out of time since you just changed the head gasket. When you put the camshaft back in you need to make sure the timing marks on the crankshaft and the camshaft are both lined up to TDC (Top Dead Center). Chances are that they are not and you will have to take the top end back apart to set them up right.
The 2.2 is known to "strip" the timing gear. The cam gear is made of a synthetic material. But...you could possibly have an injector bad on #1.
BACK FIRING COMING FROM INTAKE MANIFOLD LEAK, STICK VALVES.BUT THE IGNITION VALVE TIMING COULD BE OFF.DID YOU HAVE ENGINE ON NUMBER ONE FIRING POSITION.AND THE CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET TIMING MARKS LINE UP WITH THE TWO PROJECTIONS ON THE CENTER OF THE TENSIONER AND THE CAMSHAFT SPROCKET TIMING MARKS CORRECT.YOU CANT SET THE IGNITION TIMING ON THE 1996 UP TO 2011 MODEL THE PCM CONTROL TIMING.WHEN YOU REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD REPLACE HEAD GASKET.WHEN PUTTING ENGINE BACK TOGETHER.THE VALVE TIMING HAS TO BE CORRECT IF NOT ENGINE WILL BACK FIRE.
