I am hearing a noise, like a whirring sound that speeds up with the acceleration and makes no noise when in park. Does this sound like cv joint trouble?

It sounds like one of your CV (constant-velocity) joints is going bad. This is common on front wheel drive vehicles. The CV joint allows the drive axle to pivot as you turn the wheels. Over time the protective boots crack, the grease leaks out and you end up with the knocking noise you describe when turning while accelerating. The dealership should easily be able to inspect the CV joint boot and diagnose the CV joint.

wheel baring needs changed or you will have a wreck soon ...change that

Could be a noisy valve or lifter in the engine, or an exhaust leak.
Can you make the noise happen by revving up the engine with the car parked ?

Yes it does and it is more than likely what you are hearing.

Stationary lock to lock turning, will not damage the CV joints, they are designed to turn in this manner, to test a CV joint to see if it has damage, go to an empty parking lot, stop the car, turn the steering wheel full left, accelerate kinda hard, do you hear a clicking or clunking noise? repeat in reverse and on the right hand side. Any noises and your CV joints may be worn, also inspect the CV boots for tears and leakage by turning full left and looking at the boot, then full right. Hope this helps, let me know

Could be a bad CV joint. Check to see if any of the CV boots are torn. When they are torn the CV joint slings all the grease out and causes the CV joint to get dry then they start to make noise.

go to an empty parking lot

turn the wheel all the way to the right and drive in circle slowly

listen for a ticking noise or similar.

repeat in the left direction.

if you hear a ticking or clicking noise you likely have a bad CV joint. not a horridly expensive repair tho a necessary one

one other thing that will cause it is if the rubber boot surrounding the CV
joint is torn.

Sounds like your CV half shaft is has gone bad. More than likely when you look behind your front wheels you will see a rip or hole in the CV boot. You will need to replace the CV joint to fix this. Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!

If you hear the noise while the car is moving and usually accelerating and there is no noise when it is not moving then it could be a problem with the transmission, CV Joints or wheel bearings. From the way you describe it sounds like the CV Joints. These are the ones that transfer power from the transmission to the wheel while they allow the suspension to move up and down. If they wear out or get dirty they will start making a grinding / buzzing sound. You will find them ( 2 on each side ) connecting the center of the wheel to the transmission. There are 2 rubber boots protecting them, one close to the transmission, one close to the wheel. The joints have to be kept lubricated and clean, if any of these rubber boots is broken there is a good possibility that the CV Joint is failing and making the noise. If this is the case it will need replacement.
