1997 Dodge Ram 2500 manual transmission overdrive.

I've purchased a 1997 2500 Dodge diesel with a 5 speed overdrive manual trans. I had the 5th gear, overdrive back off the shaft. It was replace with the new, improved nut and up to date information. In less than 2000 miles hauling my R.V. trailer, it fell off again. I've been told that there is nothing left for me to do with it. The truck is mint and only has 103,000 which is nothing for a diesel. I'd hate to lose this jewel because it fits me to a tee. Any ideas how to permently fix with problem?

    Is the 6 speed overdrive a better transmission than the 5 speed and will it bolt onto the 1997 bell housing and clutch? What is the long term prognosis for 5 speed with the different shaft? Is it a monster job to just replace the shaft?

    After extensive research and talking with rebuilders all over the country, I've come to the conclusion that there is no cure for the NV4500 transmission's problem with the 5th, over-drive. Even with the best aftermarket repair kits or even rebuilt transmissions, you will be luck to get 50K on a rebult trans that is used primarily for INTERSTATE DRIVING where the 5th gear overdrive is constantly in use especially if one is hauling a trailer. The design flaw of the trans makes it impossible for ANY long-term fix and the reason why the designer of the trans went belly-up.

    can i use a 6 speed tranmission on my old 97 wich i already rebuilt my 5 speed one. two times

There is a permanent fix for the 5th gear failure on the NV4500 5spd, but its not cheep!
Quad 4x4 has a new patented main shaft and gear that is guaranteed for life (torque king ) it will be the last fix you do . none of the other after market shafts will hold 5th gear on ...Only the quad has the only completely new design

There is the possibility that the fifth gear was put backwards on the shaft. It is possible to do this, and your result will be the nut coming back off very soon. We have a truck with almost 300k miles at work that has had the fifth gear nut come off three times. The nut must be torqued to something around 675 ft/lbs, which you cannot get with anything but a super big torque wrench. One local repair shop broke two Snap-On 3/4" torque wrenches in the process on one particular transmission. I have seen a repair shop torque the nut down, and then spot weld the nut to the shaft to prevent it from backing off. This may seem drastic, but it holds.

That transmision should be a New Venture 4500,and there is an aftermarket output shaft available with later updates that is supposed to prevent the nut from backing off.At this point,.i would advise going with a remanufactured trans from a company such as Jasper...They have a standard 3 year,36k mile warranty,and that is probably going to be your best value.It sounds like the guy that built your trans just isn't very good at it.Jasper will honor their warranty,no questions asked.Tell the guy that repaired your trans,you want your money refunded as he did JUNK repairs.Any repair shop will have given you SOME kind of warranty.If he doesnt satisfy you,contact the Better Business Bereau,and take him to small claims court to get your money back.Also have you truck towed out of his shop to a more reputable one.

    Yes,it's a very involved process installing the new aftermarket output shaft,the 6 speed is a very good thought,and while i'm not certain about the interchangeability of the 6 speed where the 5 speed was,but i am certain that a remanufacturer like Jasper,would know about interchange.The thing with the NV4500 trans is,setting the endplay specifications is crucial to the longevity of the trans,while the input shaft,at the same time is just as important that it is properly supported in the crankshaft flange,by the pilot bearing.A new pilot bearing should be installed when the trans has been worked on internally.All the updated parts are fairly pricey,the new 5th gears too.There is also a less expensive route,and that is a good used from a salvage yard.LKQ offers a year warranty for a little more money,another possible avenue.Good luck..

sounds like you may havea torque converter lockup issue, one way to check is while in slower traffic (15-35mph) gear down your transmission such that you are at a higher rpm (2000-2500) then take your foot all the way off the throttle, if it is in lockup your engine rpm will stay about the same, if not it will go to about idle.

If the tcc doesn't unlock while shifting it will shift very hard and if it slips it will make your temperature increase

the second gen dodges have a problem with their overdrive going out. they sell an updated kit for the overdrive system that corrects the condition.

What's the price for a new automatic transmission for a 99 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel? The overdrive went out, and it has to be manually shifted in and out of 1st gear.

Get a phone book and find local transmission repair shops, call them and ask how much to rebuild yours, or to exchange yours for a rebuilt one. You do not want a new transmission, you want a rebuilt. It is to old to spend that much money.

The overdrive gear in the transmission is known to move on the output shaft making overdrive hard to shift into & eventually not at all

if master cylinder and slave good and have brake fluid is in system and no leaks.problem is in the clutch and pressure plate.

the problem is with the transmission overdrive circuit voltage is low. start by checking the #5 fuse in the fuse block under the hood. if it is ok check for voltages at the trans control relay. past that you may need to take it to a reputible technician for further diagnosis

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram that doesn't like to shift into 2nd when flooring it from a Stop. Imagine if you were to floor the gas in neutral, the engine REDLINEs and the engine governor kicks in to keep the RPM from blowing the engine......while stuck in first Gear. If i let off the gas, it goes into 2nd fine. I have replaced the Speed Sensor on the transmission ($18) and it seemed to fix it for one day. After 200 miles, its doing it again. ANybody have legitimate answers in here? Its only got 60K
