Check to make sure the trunk release on switch in the glove compartment isn't turned off. It's located in the upper left in the glove compartment

Have you first checked your battery ? If it is good, then check fuses. Might want to check your starter, is it getting power when you turn the key to start ? Will need someone to help you for this procedure.

Cant get trunk open on 1998 cadillac sts ,i tried the botton and key.neither which work,

Try spraying WD40 or PB Blaster into trunk lock cylinder. Let it sit for a while to work things loose, then keep wiggling the key while you try turning it gently. Work the key in and out of the cylinder to try and free up the tumblers. As for the electrical switch, check your owner's manual to see if there's a "Valet" switch or some other lockout located somewhere else in the car.

My Nissan 2009 Altima is doing the same thing and most of the time the key stays in a drawer. The dealership says they never heard of it. But doors unlocking, windows are opening and trunk is opening all randomly.
