2003 camry with 200,000 miles has rubbing noise not the brakes wondering if a cv joint or u joint problem

Sounds like a worn outer CV joint. But that would click during turns even without the brakes. Can you verify that?

If it only happens when braking, could be a brake part, like the backing plate rubbing something.

If CV joint you also get a clanging noise from area

Could be CV joint,hub bearing.

Have the front brake pads checked for wear and also have the CV joints checked.

if its a grinding/knocking type sound then it could be the cv joint gone bad.the side that makes the noise when you are loading during turning(turning left you are loading the right cv joint and vise versa)that is the side the bad joint is on.it will happen whether or not your foot is on the brake.if the noise happens as strickly a grinding noise like when brakes are metal to metal when applying the brakes then it could be brakes need replacing.also have seen were if the inner fender is loose or oversize tire is on it can rub sounding like grinding.

If it is the CV joint (and it does sound like it is), the least expensive option will be to replace the CV joint. This is really the only solution available, but the popping or funny noises can also indicate other worn parts such as struts, shocks, tire rod ends, and even the rack and pinion in your steering system. I would check all of this before going through the aggravation of replacing the CV joint.

there are several things that the noise could be, what sort of vehicle is it and where is the noise coming from and what does it sound like, if its a grinding or screeching noise it will be in the braking system, either worn discs or brake pads, if its a loud cludding when you go over bumps it could be the bushes on the sway bars, any knocking noises could be from suspension, cv joints, rubbing from tyres. loud air noises will be exhaust leak, hopes this helps you define the noise a little more, i can help more with more details, cheers.

I say it's the CV joints. You have to jack up under the lower A-Arm, to take the spring pressure off of it, to check them.

(Use jack stands, and wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Emergency brake On. Work on a hard level surface. Be SAFE! Trucks can be replaced, YOU cannot!)

cv joint boots cracked? cv shaft wearing, also double check pads have been scuffed and discs machined, they might be bedding in.still but worth looking at
