When I was driving today, I noticed a smell of gas. When I got home and turned the car off, it was really strong. We don't notice a leak anywhere. The smell was still really strong in the garage, so we took it to the driveway. It is running fine. No other obvious problems. I just filled it 2 days ago, but haven't noticed the smell until now.

I had a pinhole develope in the bottom of the gas tank in my 99 Sportage. I had similar symptoms, could not find the leak because the insulation in the skid plate under the gas tank was soaking it up. There was a recall on some of the Sportages for this problem. You can give you VIN number to a Kia dealer and they can check or you can contact Kia directly. You might be able to get it repaired free of charge.

the smell is caused by a leaking heater core inside the dash, it only takes a tiny bit of vaporized hot coolant to smell very strongly.

Hello
It sounds like you have a fuel tank leak, my best advice to you is have the car put on a car lift and look for the tell tale signs of a gas leak, there will be stains anywhere the gas has leaked out. Do not drive this until you get it looked at, it is a fire hazard if the smell is that bad. I have repaired many cars over my 35 year career for fires caused by just such fuel leaks, remember leaks get worse not better, better safe than sorry here.
