If your standing in front of the car looking down at the transmission, the output speed sensor will be on the right (drivers) side of the front of the transmission. The sensor in the middle of the trans cooler lines is the input speed sensor. The output speed sensor looks identical to that one. It is easier to access/change it from under the car. You will need a 1' socket to remove and install the new one.

How big should the hole be for the speed sensor in the transmisson for my 1997 dodge grand caravan se 3.0 liter

There is an input and output speed sensor. They look identical. The input is just user the cooler hoses and the output is to the right as your standing in front of the ven. A one inch socket will work to remove them. The hole in the transmission will be slightly smaller than one inch. If you need an exact size you can remove one of them nod measure it.

I have a 1994 dodge grand caravan with a 3.8 v6 the transmission get stuck in second gear after driving for 30 min was told it could be a speed sensor

The speed sensor could indeed be preventing the van from switching gears. Have this checked into or you could do it yourself by reading this article and following the link it provides for testing. http://www.engine-light-help.com/speed-sensor.html

Hope this helps:)

Speedometer and tachometer jump when starting

I am assuming you have a 4-speed transmission?
There are 2-speed sensor on the front of the transmission. Input and Output Speed Sensors.
They are level with each other, right above the top line of the Solenoid (wiring harness goes into this box-like assembly) The one that is closest to the Solenoid is the Input Sensor. The one (at the same level) towards the left side of the van is the Output sensor.
I believe a 1-in wrench will work, after you unplug the sensor. Torque going on for both is 20 ft-lbs. Before replacing the sensors - you may remove the sensors and clean the metal particles off the interior tips of the sensors and reinstall and check operations.
