Why would you have the brakes checked if your engine is running poorly. the engine while running makes vacuum and if that is not running correctly it will effect other systems. brakes for one work of a vacuum booster. so no vacuum sure the brake pedal will be hard to work. you will want to pull the plugs and test the compression of all the cylinders and write them down and compare that numbers first. my guess you have some bad valve issue or what they call blow bye and losing compression on 1 or more pistons. which may need to remove the heads and rebuild or replace. or even replace the engine all together depending on whats wrong. start with a compression test and go from there.

Ok guys, let's fix these things here!
Just went through this myself, so do the following:
Go to your local parts store and buy a Haynes Repair Manual.
You need to read the book first, learn how the ECM (Electronic Control Module) works. You'll see that there are alot of sensors and components that make up the fuel emissions bologna.
The nice thing about this system is not only does the ECM control all electrical functions, it also trouble-shoots it's self. When a component or sensor goes out, the ECM stores a code for that event in it's memory. You can use the Haynes Repair Manual to put the ECM into diagnostic mode and thus read any codes present.
So, all that's left is replacing what the EMC tells you too! :) Good Luck!

Under the dashboard, near the top of the brake pedal on the back side, there is a switch, disconnect the wire, if the brake lights go out, the switch is bad, need to replace it.

Check for vacuum leaks around the intake. This is the most common cause for these codes.
SOURCE: 1999 cadillac deville overheating
my husband did everything that everyone else did that had this overheating problem. It was so weird that my engine cooled at a light and heated up going down the road. I have a north star 4.6 engine and this is natorious for happening. my check engine light also came on and so I had a diagnostics done which told me my #1 injector wasn't firing , car ran like **** as well. After putting in a new water pump and plugs, ect. and realized injector was good a friend told him we could have a blown head gasket. So just to see if this was the problem I went to buy a bottle of glassbeads and the auto parts guy told us to purchase a bottle of BARS STOP LEAK BLOCK SEALER NOT RADIATOR BUT BLOCK SEALER $31.99 . He followed the directions and we waited 24 hrs. before driving it. What ever the problem was has stopped my car runs like brand new and I am loving it again. no over heating no injector problem, runs great.......I hope this helps. I know its probly a temperary fix but its a fix and now we know what the problem was. SASSY

check everything you can under the hood your air intake system all of it especially make sure all clamps are tight .. and make sure all vacuum hoses are good and not cracking or broken or just loose . you might run a little fuel cleaner through a tank of gas too cleaning the engine fuel system up some. just a few ideas..
