Odds are, if the code says a bad crankshaft sensor, then that's exactly what the problem is.
As to your comment about the timing belt.
Are you sure you really mean the timing belt?
It seems unlikely to me that you would have removed the timing belt cover, in order to make this determination.
I'm more inclined to believe you are talking about the accessory drive belt (AKA serpentine belt) that drives things like the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump, etc.
This is on the outside of the engine and is plainly visible. A small amount of play isn't unusual.
