The 4x4 drive light is flashing even though it is in 2-wheel drive. The light flashes quickly sometimes, then stops, and sometimes flashes slowly. The antilock brake light has come on three times while driving. I'm concerned they are related and there is some kind of electrical problem.
This was a weakness of the Montero Sport models. If you google Montero Sport 4WD light flashing you will find lots of information. The best troubleshooting article I have found is here: http://4wd.blogeasy.com/article.view.run?articleID=318776 This article is about the Pajero, but the Montero Sport uses the same platform so this article applies.
The Montero Sport uses several switches and vacuum modules to put the system in and out of 4WD. If any of these malfunction, the light may flash continuously, flash intermittently, fail to come on, and it can trigger the anti-lock brake light to come on. In brief, if the 4WD shift lever is engaged, but the transfer case doesn't engage, the sensors show a mismatch and will cause the light to act funny including triggering the vehicle's anti-lock break light. These SUV's need to be shifted into 4WD regularly to keep the switches and mechanisms working correctly.
Try this before you even think about a visit to the $$$$$ Mitsubishi Dealer:
Shift the 4WD lever between 4WD High, Low and 2WD at least 100 times. Often, this will free the mechanisms and resolve the problem. It worked for me after three years of trying everything else including the dealer replacing switches, etc. If this does fix it for you, just be sure to shift the vehicle in and out of 4WD several times at least one a week and this will keep the mechanisms lubricated and functioning correctly. 22-03-09 Mitsubishi 2001 3500CC Petrol NP model
I was experiencing same problem. I have changed 2WD to 4WD then amber colour light start to flash all the time. These are the steps that i have taken to fix the problem. It works for me perfectly.
Step 01:- Turn the ignition off
Step 02:- Move Gear shift to “P”
Step 03:-Move 4x4 Gear stick from 2H to 4HLC
Step 04:- Turn on the ignition (no need to start the motor, just see what happening to 4x4 indicator lights)
if the amber light is still flashing
Step 05:- turn off the iginition and move 4x4 gear in to 4LLC position
Step 06:- Turn on the ignition (no need to start the motor, just see what happening to 4x4 indicator lights)
if the amber light is still flashing
Step 07:- turn off the iginition and move 4x4 gear in to 4H position
By this time it should be start to work, if not
Step 08:- turn off the iginition and move 4x4 gear in to 2H position
Step 09:- Turn on the ignition and start the engine, then reverse few meters back and repeat above steps.
If no success, take it to Mitsubishi dealer.

Been having this problem for a few days, since we had a bit of snow and I put the car into 4LLC then moved it back into 2H. I have just been out and tried this.....I had to do it a few times, but on around the 10th time I felt a bit of a jolt and it didn't flash. Thank you. What was the problem?

I have the same problem and the dealership is saying that there is a service bulletin that this problem is with the transfer switch. They said that all 5 have to changed. Don't know if they are full of it or not. ;)
I have the same problem if you go on the front pass. side of vehicle and look for a small vacume cannister . there will be a connection a 2 wire plug . just unplug that switch and your troubles will be gone. now the 4by 4 light just blinks when you engage your 4 wheel drive which i like better because you see that better.
I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero sport LS
I'm speculating after similar experience that it's a combination of ECU sensing rear differential slippage in 2H and "suggesting" 4x4 options
it seems to happen on rain days more often than sunny days.
I also have experienced that subsequent to RESTARTING the vehicle it often stops blinking
for sure WHEN IT IS BLINKING, my vehicle is still in 2H tractionwise
Same problem, but they say it is a ecu for the 4wd that needs replacing.

I've recently started having the same issue. 4 wheel drive lights flash and eventually antilock brake light comes on. Has anyone found a fix for this without going to dealer.
I have the same issue on my '01 Montero Sport Ltd....but mine is actually switching into 4wd without me moving the lever...usually this happens at low speeds.
SAME THING!! 4x4 keeps flashing & now the antilock light comes on ...wonder what the cost is to have this fixed ? and is it causing further damage to the truck ??
FLASHING 4X4 LIGHT PROBLEM
I am experiencing the same problem and the ABS light is worrying. I shift the 2H to 4H and back again and the ABS light goes out but the 4x4 light still flashes. Seams to be electrical as the 4x4 is still ok and brakes work, but the ABS fails when the ABS light is on.
