SOURCE: pajero 4m40 2.8d turbo

in front of the deisel pump the gear wheel is slightly cut/chip mark to the back of it take it out, and place it on t or n (t for turbo n for non turbo) .normal timming is good .If not hand turn until #1 piston is up and #1 cam shaft lobes are not touching cup & shim then set pump to desired mark

SOURCE: How do i change timing chain chain guide and

first of all take out tappet pan cover,turn engine clockwise until #1camshaft are closed(intake and exhaust lobe are opposite each other)on the crank shaft pulley there is a little cut it should line up on the front plate 0 if not the pulley damper is off just make sure #1 camshaft lobes are closed. now on the realease the two tensioner bolt on cylinder head (tensioner located above deisel pump on the cylinder head) take it out unbolt front plate pull sprocket out ,chain unbolt guide. now when putting back chain all slack to go on tensioner side .when you take the tensioner in your hand there is somthing holding back the teeth press with fingers and push the teeth inn hook it with hook now put on tensioner turn engine 1revulusion to see spining free

Just a thought, I have changed timing chain before and when I put tensioner on it would throw off timing mark. I would offset the timing mark one tooth and when I would put the tensioner on the timing marks would line up.

if its noisy when startin-it confirms a timing chain--there are other components in the area wearing out too-waterpump--guides--etc--bring it to an honest mech n lettum test drive and inspect engine-cud be less $ to buy new ride

I am not particular with this mitsubishi 4m40 engine, i just wanna ask, if how can we maintain and ensure if this is in perfect timing, we could'tn see any timing marks except from its pulley, so...

There is a special tool to put back the injection pump. MH063302 OR IT EQUIVALENT. On crankshaft gear mark 1, on idler gear mark 11 to match them. watch the timing chain marked and idler marking.

check if it has a timing chain as it indicates that the chain is hitting on the timing cover ( replace it and the guides if it has) If the front of the engine is all metal then it will be a chain
It could be faulty injectors squirting and not atomizing but that noise is a knock and generally go with higher revs
