1998 GS manual Previa with 140k on clock. Has recently started slipping in 4th gear - if changing up from 3rd or down from 5th its asthough something isn't engaging and no further power from the car can be reached then it stops slipping and seems to engage and the gear is fine most of the time. At times if increasing the accelerator the slipping seems to happen again whilst still in the same gear. Any ideas please? Thanks

Thanks for the really prompt reply... not knowing much about engines am I right to think this is an expensive problem to put right if the car goes into a garage to have done and with the age and mileage am I best to leave well alone and try to change the car? If the transmission is failing what happens next- do other gears start to fail or will it fail totally? I can't repair the car myself so will need to make some hard decisions if it is an expensive problem..ouch!

Sounds like your transmission has come to the end of its life. You can try getting the transmission flushed , and an additive I.E. No Slip added. That might cure some of the problems but obviously if its slipping the clutchs inside are worn out and transmission needs an overhaul.

Chances are it will be cheaper to replace the vehicle.. Chances are it will fail totally at some point.. I would recomend having it looked at by a transmission shop and have them look at it. It could be an easy fix, or might not . either way having it looked at will be your best bet

Gears slipping

Sounds like early stages of a worn out clutch slipping under load. If it is, make sure in the future to always take your foot completely off of the clutch pedal once in gear, or you will be replacing it again. In other words Do Not Ride the Clutch. Eventually you will have trouble going up hills, even in first or second.

What would be causing gears to pop out. At first it was 3rd and 5th gears. I changed the clutch now it wont take 4th at all and 5th continues to pop out (must hold it in) 3rd doesn't pop anymore but grinds...

You probably need to rebuild the transmission, and look for gears that have been damaged, synchronizers that have failed, and worn parts in general.
The clutch has no bearing on whether the tranny slips out of gear.

GEAR SHIFTING CAMRY 2004 2.4 XLI

Hi,

This might be because of the gear box problem. By any chance, did your car face flooding? In such cases, please drain the gear box and replace it with new gear fluids. Also, check if you go in low speeds, you might be able to engage it with ease. Please come back to me if you feel this doesnt solve your issue.

Regards,
Hari
