If you have a bad or leaky freeze plug, also known as soft plugs, it needs to be replaced. Your brass plugs are the best, and in some hard to get to places there are rubber plugs that can be adjusted to fix the problem. But if you have oil in the oil pan, assuming no one put water in the engine. You probably overheated the engine enough to acquire a cracked head gasket. Normaly that's the problem, could be a cracked head also, but more than likely a gasket. If you decide to remove the heads and replace the gaskets, good idea to have the heads resurfaced. Water leakink between transmission and oil pan

Either the freeze plug you installed is still leaking or you have a cracked block.

Leaking water from oil pan or behind oil pan

figure out what type/size engine you have, call a dealer and ask for service department. ask them whether that engine has freeze plugs on the back of the block underneath the flywheel or ring gear. if not you may have a head gasket or heater hose leak which is dripping down through the bell housing presenting itself as coming via the oil pan gasket. there should be no water whatsoever in the oil pan and if there is you need to look around for a replacement used engine.

Turns over but dont start let off key and sputters 3or4 times 1998 Vortec 350 Chevy Z71 4x4

The freeze plug you replaced was due to rust or was it pushed out by freezing temperature? These plugs are not designed to protect the engine block from cracking during freezing temperatures, they are there to remove the sand from the block after casting it. I would drain your system completely and flush out the radiator thouroughly and fill with plain water, then run the engine and see if oil gets in the water, if it does and the plug was out due to freeze, then your block is probably cracked, although you could just have a head gasket leak. Oil pressure (40psi) is higher then water pressure (17psi), so getting oil in the water is always more prominent than the other way around. Flush out the system and let me know if oil returns to the water, hope this helps

Water leaking behind oil pan on a 95 chevy camaro-3.4L

If I rember correctly, there are two freeze plugs in the back of the block, behind the flywheel. They generally dont go bad often because they are pretty much protected. As that angelo guy said, more likely a hose or rear of intake gasket, but you have to look, from here I can't see it!!!
