Temperature gage has fluctuates between 100 and 260, the water is full and fan seems to be working ok, and all belts seems to be ok.

Just replaced radiator, hoses, thermostat, but the gage fluctuates when in stop and go traffic or just idling...however when I am driving at a consistent speed it drops and stays normal. What do i do? What do I need to ask the mechanic to check? I'm not very savvy when it comes to car repairs...I'm already afraid I've been ripped off.

I have the same problem. when mine gets hot I no longer have hot air in the heater, when the temp gauge drops back down I have hot air in the heater. I replaced the thermostat, but it has not changed the fluxuations. I know it is a water flow problem, what else should I check besides the TS?

The fluxuation in temp is from air bubbles in the coolant. As the air bubbles go through the system, it heats up (because if there is air then there is no coolant.) The way to fix this problem is by "burping" the coolant system. Basically, you want take off the radiator cap WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD. Don't do it if the engine is even slightly hot, and NEVER do it if the radiator cap is hot. With the radiator cap off, start the car. As the car runs and heats up, the coolant will begin to flow through the system. This will make the air bubble also flow through the system. Once the bubble (or sometimes bubbles) reach the open radiator they will "pop." Don't burp it for too long though, eventually the coolant will overflow from the radiator. Once you see the bubbles coming to the surface, only do it for about 2-3 minutes. Once you've done that, put the cap back on and it should be back to regular operation. You might want to check the coolant level, if you need more, put it in the resevior. When you pour the coolant into the resevior, turn the container on it's side so it doesn't make that "chugging" effect, this could cause more air bubbles.

You need to verify that the gage is accurate, if it is then the cause is the thermostat, but check the gage first, a repair shop can do this or you can feel the air coming off the radiator fan, if it is really hot changing to cool rapidly then the T-Stat is sticking open.

Why does temperature gauge only reach a little past half?

Larry, If the cooling system was not bled properly, the temperature could fluctuate up to 3/4 then normally back down to 1/8 on temp gage.
If your gage is just staying a little over half when running, that is actually normal and acceptable.

Heater runs hot then goes cold

Do you have a temperature gage in your instrument cluster? When the temp goes cold, does the temp gage rise? Check your coolant level both in the radiator and the coolant recovery tank under the hood, and fill as necessary. If that is OK, then check your serpentine belt for wear and/or slippage around the water pump. Lastly, if you have a temp gage and are noticing fluctuations in the reading, you may need to replace your cooling system thermostat. Good luck.

I have a 300zx non turbo , it is not leaking coolant , electric fan is working good but whene i drive on a hyway , the temperature start going up like 3/4 on the gage, as soon i star driving in the city...

I doubt very seriously the temp problem has anything to do with the timing issue. It sounds more like the water pump is going bad or you have low coolant. When your moving the fan should be free wheeling if it isn't the clutch is bad or the Fan motor is bad. I would look at the Fluid level and water pump for being the issue here.

In my chevy impala i have no hot air comming out of the vents. The temperture gage reads at about half and then will fluctuate. What could be the problem?

Check your coolant level. When the level goes down, the heater is usually the first unit to show the lack of coolant (no heat). As the coolant decreases, eventually the temperature sensor is intermittently 'out of the water' and can't indicate water temperature, causing the fluctuation. If your coolant is low, find and repair the leak.

Temperature and fuel gages are not working

Take it to a Dealer and have your gauges reset - you should also have your water pump replaced and you might as well have the Timing belt replaced also (usually at 80-90K)
