I have a 2001 Bora pd 115bhp engine code ajm... I recently done the head gasket in it and since it has been done the car is hard start from cold. the engine turns over for 10 or 15 seconds before it will start followed by some white smoke, but once the car is started its starts perfect until left for a couple of hours. problem was not there last week before the head gasket was done.

The head was pressure tested and skimmed and it was alright. The problem was not there before i dont the head so it is unlikey there is any crack in the cylinder head. car never overheated. The coolant has not run low since the head gasket was down so it couldnt be coolant leaking into a cylinder.

Sounds like there was more damage present than just the head gasket. Perhaps a crack in the cylinder head. Was it pressure checked? Was the car overheated? The white smoke sounds like coolant leaking into one or more cylinders.

The head was skimmed and pressure tested and it was ok. it is unlikey the white smoke is caused by coolant as the coolant has not run low since the head gasket was replaced. the car had not overheated. once again the car was starting perfect before the head was done. could it be cause by diesel leakage ?

Well then I don't know what to tell you. The white smoke is caused by something in the combustion chamber. Perhaps the new head gasket was defective. As well, I've seen heads that pressure checked OK leak when they warmed up. What was the reason for the head gasket replacement? Have a smell of the exhaust on startup; glycol steam has a quite distinctive odour. Did you straightedge the block as well prior to assembly? How did you clean the block? You didn't use one of those bloody awful Scotchbrite discs did you?

i have the exact same problem....it could be injector seals that seperate the high pressure from the low pressure side leaking into eachother ?also i think there is a check valve in the side of the head between the fuel pump and the head ...i took the pump off yesterday because it was leaking and sealed it with silicone to so have to wait and see does that fix it ...but it is nothing to do with the head or loass of compression ...my other guess is one of the injector has a leaking seat and is draining the fuel rail over e few hours ...or the glow plugs which is affected by cooland temp sensor and fuel temp sensor ..cud be faulty ?ill wait and see but thats a few things i came up with

I paid for a radiator, water pump, thermostat, and heater core to be put on my 2001 aurora and the engine is still bubbling I got an engine block test done and it was okay. Three Mechanics have tryed to...

does your cooling system hold pressure when it is hot? Is there the chance that either your surge tank or radiator cap is defective? It has to hold pressure when hot to function properly, and without a thermostat you will have issues with the car operating in open loop, causing damage to the engine and catalytic converter, not to mention possibly not getting heat in cold weather. You are aware that these engines (called 'shortstars') have issues with head gaskets-was it recently overheated. and is that why all this work was done? I have a 2001 Aurora with a 4.0, you have to watch the coolant level like a hawk on these engines (and on the 3.5, a sawed-off 4.0, I have one of them too, a 2000 Intrigue). If you are getting air pumped into the surge tank, you have a head gasket issue, or a cracked/warped head)-check your fluid level when the engine is cold, like after it sat overnight-fill it SLIGHTLY above the full cold mark, and start it, let it run with the coolant cap off until it gets to normal operation temp (half way up)-you may have a hard time getting it hot enough though, without the thermostat. Once at full operating temp. make certain the level is again SLIGHTLY above the full mark on the surge tank. If you are getting bubbles at this point, your block is not the issue, but the all too common head gasket(s) are-good luck, and if you get new head gaskets done, make certain you are using new bolts for the heads.

Vw bora tdi 115bhp hard to start in cold weather. I have power going to the heater plugs it is like the diesel is running back?

This may be caused by a retarded injector pump timing. You should have this checked. It's not something you can do at home it involves many precision tools. Thank you, Dana

2003 Saab 9-5 Check Engine Light

Take the car to Autozone, they will read the codes via OBD II for free.  Other parts stores may have the same policy ... call first.   My VW dealer charges $40 to pull the codes!!   I bought a low-end OBD II reader for $50, as the wife and I  both have VWs.

White smoke is usually antifreeze, the most frequent cause of this is head gasket blown or cracked head ... big bucks.  Hopefully this is not you.  Unless the car had a dramatic overheating incident, for most makes of cars, this should not happen until you have over 100K miles, probably closer to 200K.
White smoke could also be break fluid sucked in from power brake booster.  If it's brake fluid, it will smell very bad.
On cold days, when the car first starts, white smoke can just be normal condensation in the tailpipe ... if it happens after the car is warmed up ... it's something else.
Check your coolant overflow tank level ... if it's very low or empty ... put water in (don't bother with antifreeze yet in case you are burning it up in the engine).
Good luck, ..ajm
