The radios on older BMWs often have lighting issues where the display is
dim or not functioning. To properly fix this, the radio needs to be
removed. Open the hinged tabs that cover the bolts and use a small
wrench to unbolt the radio. Remove the plastic cover and then pull off
the top cover, usually held on with two screws. Remove the display
circuit board and then the tape or CD player. This should reveal
the main board. Check the bulbs to see if they are getting power. If
they are not, they are burnt out. Replacing them is a little complicated
but possible for a home mechanic

You need to resync the locks - it's easy. Lock doors from driver side - to first lock click. Then go around to passenger door and from outside, unlock & relock doors. Sometimes more than once is required but after a few trys, if that doesn't fix it, it will need new door lock actuator.
I have a quite simular problem !
What`s realy strange is that when the lights are off, it`s seams ok, but when i turn on the lights (park lights ore full with xenon) the signal strenght is much worse ?
the first thing i would do is check the speaker connectors make sure the two wires are not touching that will short out the speaker drivers in a good quality radio,
Just a thought. try pushing the eject button holding it down & with a small pair of pliers carefully lift the tape & pull it out. Tape player heads could be dirty, eject button sticking or faulty or the player is done its time. Good luck
Hi Cag. You can call your local BMW dealer and ask for the parts department. Alpine, and Blaupunkt, were the most common radio makers. The parts guys have a software program they can enter your radio serial number and retrieve a code.
