Rule of thumb is that you should have just a bit less than one inch of deflection at the center of the longest run between pulleys. Check it again in a few days and re-adjust if necessary (usually not).
The front axle connects 4wd by vacuum. check the vacuum hoses that run to the actuator. Pay close attention to the vacuum hoses running underneath the battery as battery acid can eat thru those hose easily. Good Luck.
Check fuel filter . You have a mechanical pump & a carburetor on that model dont you?...Check fuel pressure (should be around 6-7 lbs) and check coil immediately after it shuts down...sometimes coils will act like that just before they go bad..
Most common failure is crank sensor. Before running out and buying one, I strongly recommend that you do some further testing. Any decent manual has instructions for testing systems. Also: test both running and after it dies. (while running everything may check out as good) If you have spark when not running, check fuel filter as well!
Check the gas, could be water in it or drive the car with a fuel
pressure tester connected to it and watch to see if you lose pressure.
Normal pressure while driving is about 30 to 40 psi
