Low range means you are in 'low range 4 wheel drive' push the button while the engines running and the gear shift levers in neutral to switch to high range [or 2x4] low range, cannot drive over 15 miles per hour, high range can drive up to 65 miles per hour. see the difference? you need to shift the transmission to neutral, while the engines running, and your foot on the brake pedal, push the button on the 4x4 to light up to the two wheel or rear wheel diagram. then when it lights up the 2 rear wheels, it's in rear wheel drive. if this does'nt describe your problem! please do not attempt anything and call toll free# for mercedes roadside assistance for free at 1-877-815-9962 these people have been a great asset to my buisness. thank you for choosing fixya.com

What dose the idoit light that looks like a gear with a ! mark in the center of it mean? 2001 merc sable

It means there is a transmission electrical problem. There should be a transmission trouble code stored that will point you in the right direction. This will not always turn on the check engine light.
