Hello, My 2000 GMC Jimmy makes a whining noise that seems to come from the transmission. It is 4-wheel drive. Plus, when I put it in 4-wheel drive, it runs okay at higher speeds but locks up when you are driving at very low speeds. It runs fine in 2-wheel drive.
Does it sound like a loud winding sound coming from the front right side? I have a 2001 Jimmy and the 4wd tries to engage when driving up steep hills and going at highway speeds. The actuator vacuum switch engaged when the transfer case vacuum switch sends the vacuumed air to the actuator. What is happening is their is either a leak in the vacuum lines, a faulty actuator switch, or a faulty transfer case vacuum switch. When the jimmy has enough air pulling in, the extra vacuum is trying to push the actuator switch in when it is not supposed to. It is a much cheaper fix than a transmission. GMC should have recalled the whole 4wd system on any of the S10's, the JImmy's, and Blazers.
I recently took my vehicle to a transmission shop and they had to rebuilt the transmission right through. I was recently told that the transmission is a common problem in these vehicles. Sad that GM can not fix or recall the transmisison since there is a problem.

I have the same problem, however I have not tried switching from 2 whl to 4whl drive to see what happens. I have although replaced the serpentine pulley and the alternator (needed a new one anyway) and the problem continued. My next option is the temporarily replace the harmonic balancer and pulley with a known good one through a friend. Hopefully that will be it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't the problem. I have dealt with this for about a year or more. Nothing has seemed to go wrong by prolonging it, however now that I said that something might.
I also have a 2000 Jimmy 4x4 and it whines when you put it into drive(doesn't in park/nuetral) My problem is the pump in the trani
I have been having the same problem for 6 months. When I took it to the local garage they replaced the transmission filter to see if that would solve the problem but it did not. I am going to look into taking it to a transmission shop to get a quote and to find out exactly what is going on. I will keep everyone posted.
my 1999 chevy suburban 4x4 makes a whineing noise when it is in gear but not when in park or nuetral. must be trani problem but what? do these things just fall apart at 100k miles?
Has a dealer looked at this, there may be technical service bulletins for this issue.
