1986 Dodge W150 with 5.9L(360) (105,000 miles on it)runs ok cold but starts to run bad once it warms up under load(regular driving). I'll be driving along and stomp the gas and the truck will fall flat on its face(works better if you ease the gas pedal down)! The only way I can keep it running after the problem starts is to pump the gas pedal. I have a new carb on it, new plugs, coil(MSD), wires(MSD 8.5MM), air filter(wide open). only the dist and cap and bal. resister have not been replaced. there is no smog or cat.converter on this truck. also the air cond. was removed as it is used as a farm truck. the Fuel filter and Fuel pump have also been replaced not long ago... It is at the local garage here and the guy has no idea what is wrong with it. The truck use to run very very stong and it started this after a long trip(3hrs). the problem is worse if you are in a head wind or pulling a boat(under load). the trans slips a little but not bad. Comment by ed209clark, posted on Jul 22, 2008 local guy here(dirt track racer) has setup the carb and both Fuel filters have been replaced in the past month or so. Thanks for the help. Ed Comment by ed209clark, posted on Jul 22, 2008 yes he did a compression check, timing check, fuel pressure check as well. only thing they have not tried is a fuel volume check and that maybe a shot in the dark.it runs cool and the Rad. is new as well and fluid levels are steady. Comment by ed209clark, posted on Jul 22, 2008 It really doesn't burn any oil at all. I did run some ring free through it and replace the oil afterwards, but that was quite a while ago before the new carb. thanks again! Comment by ed209clark, posted on Jul 22, 2008 compression check was good, I will ask him about the head Gasket. maybe time to buy a rebuild engine and start from scratch, any ideas on where to go for a good rebuilt motor? I'd hate to do it but... its cheaper than a new truck! Comment by ed209clark, posted on Jul 22, 2008 good point I'll buy a new dist and cap to take that out of the equation! I can reuse them if I need to get a new motor anyway Comment by ed209clark, posted on Jul 22, 2008 ok I'll change the dist/cap/rotor and keep ya posted! Thanks!!! Ed Comment by ed209clark, posted on Jul 30, 2008 update 7-30-08 Truck is still running like ****! we change the Ballast resistor, Cap Rotor, and Ignition Module. The truck will not idel at all and back fires when you let off the gas(it runs better after it back fires if that means anything). I checked the truck running with the fuel cap on and off to check for vapor lock as well(no diff either way). This truck use to run balls out and has been acting like this since I drove it a long way pulling a boat.(loss of power, rough running). It use to be worse when it got hot but it runs like **** all the time now(some of the changes have effected the problem but not corrected it). I'm leaning towards a fuel supply problem and pos. a timing issue as well?? any ideas guys? I took the truck to another shop here where the guys are old school and they seem to think the truck is not gettting enough fuel... I'll let you know more when I hear back from them... at wits end
If no one has checked the timing, do so, it could have jumped a tooth and it could cause that type of symptom. Your saga sounds like me with a 78 W150 with a 360. I was pulling it apart to check the cam after doing many of the same things you have done only to find the timing chain was warn. My truck is missing the timing tab so I've always simply timed it by ear, or I'd have located the issue sooner.
I have a '86 dodge ram w/318 - got it for free , only running on 4 out of 8. rebuilt carb (holley 2280 2 barrel ) still has no power but sounds like it's hitting on all 8. found on web a "power heat valve"between the passenger side exhaust manifold and the down pipe. it's in the haynes manual page 4a-22 illustration16.1 - i can't imagine what it should do when it's working (why choke off half your exhaust-ever) but i am going to check that out.have to get by a lot of rust first. good luck!

Check the air intakes and hoses, more likely you will have to setup the carburator
Also check the fuel filter.

i would say check your timing or timing chain(with 100,000 miles it might need to be replaced)and readjust your new carb

rebuilt carb a second time, runs much much better! still not the crisp response to full gas but not bad if you slowly ramp the gas down. runs rough when its cold but fine once it warms up!
