I bought a '88 Honda Accord LX with over 200,000 mi. the other day. It makes a loud rattling noise under the hood. Almost like an aluminum can. The previous owner said it is a loose bracket in the exhaust? Anyone have an idea to what it could be?
The problem is actually caused by the Timing CHAIN not the timing belt...THE CHAIN!!! There's a chain in the back of your engine which rotates the bearings of your engine. When the timing chain heats up, it hits the bearings thus making a rattling noise. There are two solutions for it. Either you get a new timing CHAIN which would cost around $1000 because the entire engine needs to be taken out. Otherwise, if the sound doesnt bother you, continue driving since it wont cause any significant damage to the engine itself. I suggest you continue driving while the car is still running.
