If the remote is the type with a small screw in it, the batteries can be sourced at a jewelers, camera shop or pharmacy. If it has no screw in it, and is the single button type, unfortunately they are a sealed remote, and you need to get a new one and code it to the system. They aren't too expensive, around $70. Any Toyota dealership should be able to do this for you, it is a sequence of opening and shutting the drivers door and turning the ignition on and off.

How do I program a 1998 Toyota Camry remote?

Great news, your 1998 Toyota Camry Key Fob is self programmable. Below are the programming instructions. Be patient, it might take you a few times to get this right. It is all about timing.

Most remotes can be self-programmed. If this procedure does not work, you must have your remote programmed by a professional automotive locksmith or dealership.

Obtain all remote transmitters for this vehicle.
1. Insert key into ignition and turn ignition switch to ON position.

2. Locate the ECU (Engine Control Unit) and press and hold the ECU PROGRAMMING button for 3 seconds. The ECU will be located under one of the front two seats, the trunk, or under the dashboard on the drivers side. You will need a small pointy object like a pen to depress the ECU button. After pressing the ECU button for three seconds, you will see the STATUS MONITOR LED turn on for 5 seconds. Vehicle is now in programming mode.

3. Press and release the top button on the remote. The STATUS MONITOR LED will turn off. A chirp will be heard as well as one flash of the exterior lights.

4. Turn off the ignition. Programming is now complete, test remotes for proper programming.

Car alarm going off irratically

You have changed the remote battery? A failing battery can cause erratic results, depending on the internal circuit design. Alternatively the battery may be making poor contact.

Your central processor is erratci and givng into wrong commands. Start from exiting one by one from the battery of the remote to the main hand rest., Check for poor connection in the wiring harness specially in the areas of the door hinges where the wires go into the customer control. Also try to find out if any moisture or oil has clogged on to the main Unit.
Hope you have patience.
