Still smokes after general overhaul

Hi, i own a toyota corolla xl 1996 model. it has 12 valves at 1.3 liter displacement. recently it underwent general overhaul -- replaced valves, valve guide, valve seals, piston rings and had the cylinder head refaced. after all of these, the car still belches gray smoke that even gets worst when going uphill. oil level goes down considerably as shown by the dip stick. what else needs to be done?

What are the valve clearances for a 2e 12 valve engine?

I have Toyota Corolla EE80 2E engine with 12 valves. I recently top overhaul but the engine is not running in perfect condition. The engine rpm goes up and down (engine shaky). I set the rpm around 1200, if i set it lower than that the engine will stop. I check the engine timing with both the cam and crank on the correct mark. Sounds like the carburetor failure but i had service it but still the same. If i turn the distributor to the right (******) the engine rpm drop, than i turn it to the left (advance) but the rpm drop too, as i know the engine rpm should raise high and could hear the pinking sound from the valves if the the engine accelerate. For your info, i bought the cylinder head from someone who previously general overhaul his engine about 6 months ago. He dismantle his engine because of con rod problem. I just fix the cylinder head to my engine without grinding and adjusting the valves because it had been grind and adjusted 6 months ago. I check the spark plugs but look all black. I pull the plug cable one by one during the running it sounds all ok. Now i wonder what is actually wrong with the engine? Do i need to adjust the valve clearance too? What is the valve clearance for both exhaust and inlet, hot and cold? If i do the valve adjustment and yet still the problem, what is next?

It really does overheat a lot when in traffic.

You need to check youe water pump, thermostat and your radiator cap and if all of that is good it sounds like a blown headgasket.

Excessive smoke in the tail pipe

1988, time to send it to the wrecker... or put in a crate motor.

how much oil is it burning between oil changes?

only a few ways oil gets burnt in the exhaust.

1) worn out rings - overhaul (running thick oil might help a little)
2) worn out valve guides - overhaul (running thick oil might help a little)
3) blow by is forcing it into the PCV system - overhaul
4) crack somewhere between the oil gallery and the intake... this usally run really bad though...

yep kinda sums it up.... overhaul (replace or wrecker)

Peace

I have a 95 Corolla and it burns an excessive amount of oil.. seems to burn 1-4 quarts every gas tank fill up. I just recently bought this car for $1400 and and it was checked by a mechanic. What can I do...

i would suggest, go for a top overhaul first, maybe a worn out valse seal or open your oil cover and observe if smoke comes out or check dip stick if smoke comes out, must be a problem with your piston rings... or try a compression test to be sure. :D

My Toyota Corolla XL 1996 model is belching heavy white smoke. I have just changed the oil and also the spark plug. What do you think is the problem?

white smoke usually indicates the engine is burning oil or its burning coolant. when the engine is cold remove the radiator cap and start the vehicle, if it immediately begins to blow air and or coolant from the radiator you most likely have a blown head gasket, if not then remove the oil cap and feel for air coming out. if it blows kinda like a hair dryer then you most likely have a piston ring issue and you are burning oil. either way you may be looking at major surgery to repair.

If you remove thermostat water will circulate too fast and will not cool down, replace thermostat and check if your fan is turning in correct direction. Also make sure your ignition timing is ok. I found on some vehicles the waterpump seems ok but when vehicle starts heating up the impeller gets loose on the shaft. Check your brakes if they are not binding.
