LOW COOLANT LIGHT COMES ON SOMETIMES AND TEMP GUAGE SHOWS ENGINE GOING TO OVERHEAT. HEATER GETS COLD. IS IT THE THERMOSTAT?

There may be a thermostat problem, but your symtoms indicate low coolant level. When coolant is too low, it will not circulate, so you get no heat in car, and the coolant remaining in engine block overheats because no cool fluid coming in.
You need to fill the system up properly then look for leaks.
With cold engine, open radiator cap. Fill with antifreeze directly in radiator. Start engine, top up rad if level drops. Put heat control on Hot. Fan on low, heat on high. Gently rev engine and top up rad as needed. IF as engine heats up, it starts kicking fuild violently out of radiator, then the thermostat is bad. if not, then recap radiator, top up overflow bottle and you're done. Look under car for any sign of leaks. Steady dripping indicates a leak, then address that.

Most of the times the heater core gets clogged or corroded. inside the fire wall and the hoses run through the engine compartment and into the firewall. You can try disconnecting the top and bottom hoses and using a garden hose to flush out debris. Flush through top hole first then bottom cycle back and forth to break everything up and water comes out clear. Then hook the hoses back up. Also make sure that your radiator l with coolant at the proper level. The heat typically coming out warm then blowing cold is low coolant or clogged heater core but the gauge on the dash should only symbolize engine temp. If it stays on cold, you may also want to check your thermostat to ensure it functions and opens and closes as it should. All cheap fixes that can be done yourself.

The vehicle is 2004 buick century. sometimes the temp guage rises and comes back down. during this time, clod air blows. sometimes the temp guage is 1/2 way and cold air blows. thermostat has been changed....


is your electric fans running constantly. and most times then not you`ll need a water temp sensor or water temp relay. usually the temp sensor on that model comes usually next to the thermostat with a little wired plug on top. or on the radiator. either way pull the plug while the motor is cold. unscrew the sensor and screw the new one in and replace the electric plug back on top of the sensor. 2 things: Cold motor, have every thing set up and ready because when you take out the sensor the coolant will start to come out. you will not loose much if you work quick. keep rags or paper towels below the sensor to keep coolant off the motor and smelling when it gets hot. you have also pour or hose off coolant after your done installing the new coolant temp sensor.

not the pump but air in the system or a broken wire to the coolant level sensor
that sensor at the top of the radiator tank has to be completely immersed in coolant or the circuit is broken and the light comes on
same effect id the wire to that sensor is broken in the insulation

Check your coolant level. Especially after you drive it and it starts to cool down. You have air in the system and it needs to be purged. Sad to say but chrysler/ dodge are bad for this problem. Some times you have to remove the hose from the heater core spout to get it purge correctly. You have to do this while it is running.

Not sure if i have a problem but the low coolant light came on, added coolant, went up to engine temp., bottom hose coming off of water pump is cold, is this normal?


it will be cold untill the thermostat gets to 195 degrees and that lets the coolant circulate thru out the engine and radiator

If the temperature is cold outdoors, this can be a symptom of a stuck open thermostat. With the thermostat stuck open the engine never gets warm, so it won't give good heat. It's not expensive to get a new one, and they are easy to replace, so take it in and have it checked. Another symptom of that is very low gas mileage in the cold weather.

Would the heater control valve malfunctioning make the engine overheat blowing hot air out the heater one moment,then not blowing the hot air, temp gage spikes 225 plus. The motor takes awhile to heat up...


Heater control valve malfunction will not cause engine to overheat unless coolant is leaking externally...Overheating going down the road can be the result of a few different things...Partly clogged radiator...Insufficient air flow due to possible fan problem...External coolant leak...Make sure fans are operting properly and have cooling system pressure tested for leaks...Gaining and losing heat on the inside of the vehicle usually means system is low on coolant but you must find out where coolant is going
