Make sure the tranny fluid level is good (check with eng running) a ****/kick is felt when valves start to stick due to contamanation, moisture, dirty fluid, lack of fulid or if the valves start to leak.

best advice is to look in scrap yards for a accident damaged car and buy the box depending on the price and make sure the computer comes with it ,failing which this vehicle is 16yrs old so consider if its worth repairing firsat
well i had thesame problem with my 1995 m A6. its the potentionmeter switch which sits on top of the engine and connects to the throttle assembly. if its not working then the gearbox wont change gears until very very late, easy to come off ..only 2 screws.
