I would suggest getting the service manual, that is what I do with my vehicles and when you think about the price of a mechanic is a small price to pay for having the same information dealer mechanic would use at your finger tips.
If you need anything else let me know.
Thanks,
Lee

2000 VW Cabrio 5 speed manual. I had an emergency stop and used engine braking. Now I only have 1st and 2nd gear. I lost 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse. How do I fix or check linkage?

Question edited for clarity. Funky one space then punctuation :>D
Question moved to sub category.

Check out the videos on servicing the gear linkage. It contains plastic connectors. Personally, I would give a local transmission specialist the job.

Manual transmission F35 on a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Turbo.

Do the following tests with the engine COLD and turned OFF.
Is everything still connected at both ends of the linkage? If yes, get a helper to shift the gears and callout the number it is while you look down on the transmission linkages and watch how it moves.
Neutral is not too hard to find with a bit of trial and error. Twist the actual linkages on the transmission left and right. It will find a position where it will always return to. This will be the same whichever way you twist any of the linkages. It will usually be the middle position for each linkage. This is Neutral.

1999 Pontiac Firebird manual transmission. Reverse pops out of gear.

Check the linkage first. They put plastic grommets on the arms. They disintegrate. After that, it is internal. They also put plastic tabs on the shift forks. Could be a bad gear.

1988 Dodge Ram 50 Automatic shifts into park reverse and neutral. But physically won't go into drive gears.

Disconnect shift cable from transmission linkage and try to manually put transmission in drive gear ( make sure wheels chocked/park brake on ). If transmission goes into drive gear, suspect a shift cable or shifter assembly problem. If you can't manually shift into drive gear by hand with cable disconnected, suspect internal transmission/shift linkage issue

When you put it into gear gets hung up in between two gears

My dad always lectured me to "look for the most likely or obvious things first." First, for a moment, I'll assume you're talking about an automatic transmission... If so, check the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) level.. Correcting any problem there just might fix you up.
If you're talking about a manual shift transmission, and I'm afraid that you are, that's a whole different deal. There's a mechanism, and it can either be on the outside.. or the inside of a transmission... that's allowing one shifting lever to remain engaging a gear.. as you're trying to engage another gear with a different shifting lever. A vehicle will not move very far if it is in two gears. The idea of it actually being between two gears or being in two gears at once, is quite concerning. A broken shifting fork inside the transmission can cause this.. If there's shifting linkage you can get to, you can try to make sure that all linkage is in the neutral position. If you can accomplish that, it should go... and you'll need to take it easier on your shifting gears... because, unless you get some repairs made, it can easily happen again. If you get all the linkage in a neutral position... and then the car is willing to go, that means it is still in a gear... which is bad.... Your transmission needs work.
