First of all, air bag sensors are not under the seats, so don't worry. Next, the switch working at certain times means that perhaps you do not have to replace it. The cold switch contacts are slightly corroded from moisture condensing on them. When the car warms up, the contacts are "clean" and make good electric contact. Choose: live with a little inconvenience or start messing with the switch to clean off the electrical contacts inside with electrical contact cleaner which requires removing the switch and opening up its insides.
Have the switch tested for the seat and also verify the seat has power to the switch before you do any parts replacing. Power seats have more than one electric motor and it very unlikely that all would stop working. Go under the seat and locate the heavy connector that comes out of the rug and connects to the seat, using a 12 volt test light probe the connector and see that at least one of the heavy wires there is "hot", you may need the key on. If you find no power check owners manual for the location of the power seat fuses, they are likely under the hood. Good luck and hope this helped. the switch has failed or a combination of the switch and motor. the switch will be the easiest to replaace as you will have to remove and on some vehicle partially disassemble the seat to do the motor. The switch os mounted on the plastic panel which is held to the seat usually by 2 - 4 screws.
Before you start beating up thing's , test the electrical circuits. Do you know anything about automotive electrical systems ? How to use a volt meter an a wiring diagram to test for B+ power to the switch an testing the ground .
Does your envoy have memory seats ? Your vehicle has four or more electric motors to control back an foward , up an down etc.. the odds of more then one motor being bad at one time are highly unlikely .
Look under the seat any trash under there keeping it from moving ?
If you have memory seats there is a control module involved in making the seats work . If it has memory seats it could have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes .
DTC B1735, B1740, B1745, B1750, B1755, B1760, B1815, or B1820
The seat adjuster switches are inputs to the driver and passenger seat modules. The seat modules supply the adjuster switch assemblies with a battery positive switch supply circuit and monitor the switch signal circuits. In an inactive state the switch signal circuits are floating and when a switch is pressed the signal circuit is closed to the switch power circuit within the adjuster switch assembly. When battery voltage is present on the switch signal circuit the seat module determines the switch status to be active. DIY Blazer GMC Jimmy Power Seat Control Diagnostics and Repair Electric...
Big problem with these cars is the electrical connector behind the driver seat on the floor. Son of a gun to open use a small screw driver and be careful. They must closetightly and hold. 90% of time the terminals are loaded with corrosion. Remove battery power from the vehicle and either clean them or replace them. If that doesn't work pull seat cushions out and test the switch. Use shop manual for this
simple test. Either check the switch for resistance or remove the switch from the electrical connectors and jump the terminals with a jumper wire to see if you get the seat motor to move. If it does you need a new switch if it doesn't you need a new motor. Shop manual may have another way to test this with the switch in place. Here you are measuing for continuity.
This is fun stuff . good luck &keep me posted
