2000 Pontiac Grand Prix interior fan speeds 1-4 not working
1. Original blower - bad…doesn't work at all
2. Original resistor - bad…blows HI speed all the time whether the key is in the ignition or not... as long as new (Adv Auto) blower 1 is installed
3. New (IWI) resistor 1 - All speeds on fan worked for an hour. After an hour only HI speed works. After speeds 1-4 quit working, headlights also quit working on speeds 1-4. Headlights work on OFF and HI. After speeds 1-4 quit working, rear defroster quit working on speeds 1-4 but does work on OFF and HI.
4. New (Adv Auto) resistor 2 - turned key on, all speeds worked…so did headlights and rear defroster. Started car and back to HI speed only, no headlights or defroster on speeds 1-4
5. New (GM) resistor 3 and new (GM) blower motor 2 installed. HI speed only, no headlights or defroster on speeds 1-4
All fuses under hood and by glovebox are good. Replaced 20a and 10am HVAC fuses by glovebox anyway.
"Light" testing appears okay:
When testing two-prong plug to blower motor, "Screwdriver Tester" lights up on all speeds on one pin.
When testing 7-prong plug from car to resistor, "Screwdriver Tester" lights up pin B and pin "fused" on LO
When testing 7-prong plug from car to resistor, "Screwdriver Tester" lights up pin A and pin "fused" on M1
When testing 7-prong plug from car to resistor, "Screwdriver Tester" lights up pin D and pin "fused" on M2
When testing 7-prong plug from car to resistor, "Screwdriver Tester" lights up pin C and pin "fused" on M3
When testing 7-prong plug from car to resistor, "Screwdriver Tester" lights up pin (can't remember…but lights another pin) and pin "fused" on HI
Checked for short to ground with ohm meter…appears okay…but not sure if I did it properly as I don't really know how to use that machine.
Visually checked all wires...Wiggled all the wires/harnesses I could find while on speeds 1-4. No clicks…no sudden starts/stops of blower motor.
Other than calling ghostbusters...any help here?
Blower does not work on any speed. Have replaced the resistor, and the 30 amp fuse and still does not work.after replacing the fuse I at least got the ac light and the defrost light to work. But still no blower. CluelessBlower does not work on any speed. hello there I bought a used 02 aztek and it just stared to do funky things so here there are hope you can help... 1) when driving car starts to legg sputter n shutter engine light on and rpms drop and car coms to crawl engine light flashes and car dies.. t will start after a hour or so but continues like this this above. 2) I bought odb2 reader to find problem and odb2 will NOT read at all. why?... (3 have checked ALL fuse's in cabin on passenger side ALL are good. checked fuse's under hood top passenger side. and all are good EXCEPT I found a yellow wire going from the fan relay to a 10 amp fuse to run both rad fans soon on start up they run constant. when yellow wire is removed from 10 amp no fans run and engine heats up. so what can I do t fix this lovely P-o-s and get rid of it. thanks for the helphello there I bought a used 02 aztek and it just stared to do funky things so here there are hope you can help... 1) when driving car starts to legg sputter n shutter engine light on and rpms drop and car coms to crawl engine light flashes and car dies.. t will start after a hour or so but continues like this this above. 2) I bought odb2 reader to find problem and odb2 will NOT read at all. why?... Hi!!
When the Blower Motor Resistor (controls blower speeds) goes bad, the blower motor works only on HIGH SPEED. REPLACE IT.
BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR
Removal & Installation
Disconnect negative battery cable.
Remove right lower instrument panel insulator panel.
Disconnect blower resistor connector located behind right side of dash.
Remove blower resistor screws and blower resistor.
To install, reverse removal procedure
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa!!
It's not the blower motor that is bad, but rather the blower motor resistor. Next to the motor is the resistor and by replacing that the motor should work in all the speeds. This is a common problem on the 97-04 Grand Prix.
Replace the blower resistor that is mounted next to the blower motor on the passenger side of the vehicle.
This will restore correct blower operation and I suspect it is also back-feeding voltage resulting in your electrical issues.
Two screws hold the blower resistor into the heater case and it is very easy to replace.
Good luck
WITH A TEST LIGHT CHECK THE BLOWER RESISTOR FOR POWER ON THE YELLOW, TAN, PURPLE, AND LIGHT BLUE WIRES. THE ORANGE WIRES CONTROL THE HIGH SPEED CIRCUIT. DO THIS FOR EACH POSITION OF THE BLOWER SWITCH.
THE BROWN WIRE ON THE HVAC CONTROL CONNECTOR 1 POSITION B COMES FROM THE HVAC FUSE 20 AMP. NO POWER ON THAT WIRE WILL CAUSE THE BLOWER TO NOT FUNCTION ON THE LOWER SPEEDS.
this could be one of two things .1 a bad blower motor resistor .2 a bad blower motor. if the blower motor resistor is bad i should work on high all the time.
i have been having that same exact problem with my 2002 grand prix for over a year now, and when my ac is on the lower setting the it doesnt work plus the headlights and lights on my dash go out. On Max everything works. i changed the blower resistor(about $35), still doesnt work. i changed all relays and fuses related to the ac, still doesnt work. i changed out the actual ac control switch in the dash, still doesnt work. i have changed everything but the blower motor and have asked every mechanic and auto parts retailer i come across and no one knows the answer. The best answer i got is that it is probably a wiring problem like a short somewhere.
Two possibilities I can think of. #1. The blower motor itself is dead, or #2. The blower motor resistor is fried. Blower motor resistor, however, is more known for taking out certain fan speeds, such as the lower fan speeds.
