On the interior light fixture there usually is a 3-position slide switch. positions are:
1. OFF
2. ON-WHEN-DOOR is OPEN
3. ON
Make sure the switch is in the middle (2) position.
Also, check the door switch to be sure it is functioning correctly.
The opening and closing by itself is either the door being out of alignment or the Door pin being worn and in need of replacement. As far as the interior lights staying on, look for the brightness control for the dashboard lights. If that is turned all the way to the brightest setting there is a position just past that which turns the interior lights on continuous. Make sure it is not in that position. If it is not in that position and the lights are staying on with all doors closed, to include the rears, and you have checked the switch on the dome light itself to make sure it isn't set to ON, then the problem is a switch in one of the door jams being grounded or a wire was tapped into the power circuit for the dome light that has grounded. This happens when the LoJack installer or Alarm installer makes the mistake of tapping the light circuit for power.
Usually the solution to this problem is to use a good penetrating oil and spray HEAVILY the latch mechanism (both doors), let it soak in, and open/close the door 15-20 times-the sensor is in the door and it gets hung up, spraying lubricant on the latches frees it up.
generally this is from the driver door switch going bad. it is used most often so it goes bad first. go to a dealer parts department and buy the door switch. easy to take out and install, generally a snap or clip.
Check your DOME light switch. There are 3 positions. Completely OFF even with doors open, ON with doors shut so you can read while parked, NORMAL for the lights to come on only when the doors are open.
Your headlight switch will also turn everything ON inside when it is turned completely to one side. Just twist this switch a little towards center if this is on.
is the door ajar light on sometimes also when driving? I had a similar problem with the light staying on. I determined that it was the passenger front door latch sticking. I opened the door, then took a screwdriver to push the latch shut on the door jamb. (Make the truck think the door is shut even though it is open). Then lubricate that jamb and pull the handle open to open the door. Keep doing this (closing with screwdriver and opening with handle) until the latch works freely. This took care of my light and door ajar problem.
