2001 BMW 530, car turns over fine but sometimes just cranks and cranks without the engine starting. Battery turns engine over great but wont start. Next day starts great all day, then acts up again and repeats problem

Scan the car for fault codes. When my 535 died like that, it was the crank position sensor.

Is the battery good?

Low fuel pressure or problem with spark plugs or crank sensor is got dirty and needs cleaning or its time to replace crank sensor.

We do not have BMW diesels (thank goodness) in the USA. That said has the engine control moule been scanned for fault codes? You must do this 1st.

Check for ignition module

You can Check the batter at an autozone and if it passes it could be your injecters that could be dirty, but its most likey the battery is at low charge

You need a new battery, or your battery cables are loose

there's not a quick-fix answer for these kinds of issues. you're just going to have to catch it in a no-start condition and then trace power/grounds until the problem is found.

you may need to get a mechanic to cheak the crank angle sensor as if it is faulty if it gets into a certain position it wont let the car start

I had the same problem couple months back and the problem was bad ground, once I got it corrected by cleaning out the battery terminal the car starts right up, thus I returned my starter back to the point of sale
