There are no fan belts - there is a alternator/power steering belt and a air conditioning belt. There is an adjustment bolt that you will need to tighten. You want to have roughly 1/4" of slack or so after tightening the belt. I recommend taking a look at a service manual for the location.

SOURCE: will 1999 subaru engine fit in 1997 subaru legacy?

Yes as long as the Motors are the same. You might need to have the computer out of doner car. Doors are suppose to fit 96 to 99.

Do not attempt to change your timing belt if you don't have the tools, and the know how. You must have at least a timing analyzer and a timing light. If you have all of the above, you may go ahead. It's one hell of a job. Open the hood of your car. Take the valve cover off. And
the timing belt cover. Loosen the idler, so you
can take the belt. But first make markers so you can return everything to its original position.Otherwise, have it change at the service center, by a qualified mechanic to do it right.

". Loosen the lock nut, back off the adjusting bolt and install the new belt after removing the old one."

Mind you, the previous owner may have left it off because bad compressor, a/c leak, or other problem... Get a can or 2 r134a and you may have to add some along with a small can of oil to test the system

Timing belt broke and need timing marks diagram 2.2 subaru

the timing marks are on the camshaft pulleys and there are 2 notches on each pulley> they line up with 2 marks on the engine block for each pulley> and the crankshaft has a notch that lines up with a mark on the engine block aswell> pluss the new timing belt will have white marks on it that will line up with all of the marks on the pulleys when they are in the right place so its nearly impossable to do it wrong
