I am trying to install a new lift gate support cylinder on the hatchback of an '02 outback. I cannot get the new cylinder to compress at all. Is there some way to get the brand new cylinder to compress for the first time?

That cylinder should compress but you will not be able to compress by hand theres a lot of pressure, but if you have it connected to hatch and doesnt compress then the cylinder is on wrong or bad.

In this link it explains how the drivers side cylinder lifts and lowers the lift gate. The passenger side just hold the gate in the open position. If the lift gate will not stay open the passenger side cylinder is probably bad

Does it still have the tailgate lift cylinders? The power tailgate lift is designed to work with the cylinders, but it won't work if the cylinders have lost their pressure.

I purchased a new support for the lift gate. It pops in easily but the lift gate won't close now. What am I doing wrong? I can't see any other way to put it in.

Did you remove the safety clip that stops it from collapsing during installation? Some of these need to be installed compressed and if they extend too far out they will lock up. I would remove the support, compress it at least halfway and then put it back in place with the hatch halfway closed if possible. Then lift the gate and see if that helps in the operation. This assumes you are talking about the spring tension Hydraulic lift bar on the hatch and that you can reach the connecting points with the hatch partially closed.

2000 subaru outback trunck won't unlock/open

Is it a lift back or window and tail gate? Either way, there is a little hole on the inside for the escape hatch. Take a small pin, wire, coat hanger, push it straight in, it should pop the window, door, whichever, might be a small button over the hole, that way you can get the door lock fixed without smashing the lock off. I never tried mine , but I know all cars have them now. Check it out.

The liftgate will not stay open. There is fluid showing below the support cylinder on the drivers side. I believe the cylinders are shot and need instructions on replacing ford freestyle lift gate sup

for the most part there are small clips top and bottom of the cylinders use a small screw driver and pry the clips out and remove be sure to put a broom handle under the hatch or have someone to hold it up why you are replaceing them so the lift gate does not fall on you.
