In the trunk. You will find black plastic wing nuts that hold the felt panels in place, remove and pull back the panel pieces and you can now access the taillight assembly, if you can't access the bulbs from that point you need to remove the tail lights by un bolting the 10mm nuts holding the taillight assembly then remove the taillight from the car now on the outside you should be able to access the bulbs from there by turning the bulb plugs about a 1/4 to a 1/2 turn, reassemble the taillight and interior panels.
1. Remove the two small Phillips head screws holding the inside edge of the Taillight assy (you have to open the tailgate)
2. Pull straight back on the Taillight assy levering most of your pressure to the outside edge. (There is two peg like things [top and bottom of the
assy]stuck into a tight fitting hole in the body, so it will take some
effort, as they are pretty snug..but, they should eventually pop out)
(Put a dab of vasoline on the pegs before you stick them back in, this makes future entries easier)
3. Twist each lamp base 1/4 turn CCW and the lamp base/holder will come right out of the Taillight assy.
4. While grasping the bulb, Pull straight out from the base..Insert new Bulb. (Spray a little lubricating contact cleaner in the socket and on the bulb base, before you put the new bulb in.)
5. Add a little vinly/rubber spray protectant to the rubber gasket on the base.
6. Re-install Lamp and base into Taillight assy using a 1/4 turn CW twist of your wrist
7. Align the pegs on the Back of the Taillight assembly with the mating holes on the body.
8. Gently, but firmly smack the Taillight assy with the heel of your hand,to seat the pegs.
9. Re-install and tighten the two screws and go wipe off the finger prints and smudges from Taillight assy lens.
Instructions on how to change the bulbs should be inside your owners manual.But here you go;
Lift the tailgate and ensure that it is properly supported.
3
Remove the two screws at the top of the taillight assembly
with a Phillips screwdriver. Set both screws together, to the side of
your work area.
4
Grasp the taillight assembly horizontally on the left and
right. Slowly pull the assembly toward you and away from the truck's
frame. Use care while you're pulling the taillight assembly as there
will still be wiring connected to it. Once the assembly is away from the
frame lay it down on the bumper.
5
Remove the brake light socket from the taillight assembly.
Rotate the socket a quarter-turn counter-clockwise to unlock it from the
assembly. Withdraw the socket slowly from the hole on the taillight
assembly to avoid breaking the brake light bulb.
6
Remove the brake light bulb from its socket by grasping it
between three fingers and pulling it straight out of the socket. Put on
some latex gloves before you touch the new brake light bulb.
7
Place a small hairline bead of dielectric grease on the metal
contacts at the base, on both sides of the brake light bulb. If the
grease gets anywhere on the glass portion of the bulb, discard it and
start with a fresh bulb. This grease is not absolutely necessary.
8
Insert the brake light bulb back into its socket. Push down on the bulb gently until it seats itself.
9
Now that it's connected carefully insert the bulb into the
socket back through the hole on the taillight assembly. Lock the socket
back in place by rotating it a quarter-turn clockwise. Do not over
rotate the socket. When it locks in place, you stop rotating.
10
Lift the taillight assembly up off the bumper. Position it so
that it's ready for re-installation. Push the assembly back into place
on the frame. Make sure that all of its wires are tucked back behind it
and that no wires get pinched.
11
Reinstall the two mounting screws and tighten them a quarterturn past hand tight. Shut the lift gate door.
According to the owner's manual for 2009 on pages 464-65: (1) open the liftgate (2) remove the two fasteners from the inboard side of the taillight housing. (3) insert a trim stick between body panel and outboard side of the taillight housing with one hand and grasp the flange on the inboard side of the taillight housing with the other. use the trim stick and hand pressure together to disengage the taillight housing from the vehicle. (4) rotate the bulb's electrical connector 1/4 turn counterclockwise (lefty loosey) and remove it from taillight housing. (5) remove the bulb from the connector socket and install replacement bulb. (6) install the bulb and connector assembly into the taillight housing and rotate the connector 1/4 clockwise to lock it in place (7) reinstall the taillight housing and fasteners. don't be surprised if you crack a fastener or two. i hope this helps--good luck. jono
Open the trunk by using the driver's side trunk release latch or by manually unlocking it.
Peel back the trunk liner to expose the wiring connector and taillight housing plastic retainers.
Disconnect the wiring connector, loosen the plastic retainers and remove the taillight assembly from the car.
Twist the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise to remove it from the taillight assembly. Then, pull the malfunctioning bulb straight out of the socket.
Insert the replacement bulb directly into the empty socket and then twist the socket back into the taillight assembly.
Reinstall the tail light assembly.
Activate the turn signal to make sure it's working. If it lights up, fasten the trunk lining back into place and close the trunk
To change the taillight assembly open the trunk and pull the cover back on what ever side you need to change. You will see either wing nuts holding the taillight in or 10mm nuts holding the light in. Remove the bulbs and unbolt the taillight assembly and remove replace in reverse.
After you remove the 2 bolts there is 2 cone shaped tensioners that help hold the taillight housing on. Grab the taillight firmly on the top and bottom, and pull it straight towards you until the tensioners pop. They will not be damaged and are made to pop in and out.
Then find the bulb housing of the burnt bulb, turn the housing clockwise, and remove the bulb housing, remove the bulb by pulling on the black base of the bulb only on the short sides on the housing. (DO NOT pull on the glass, as it may break in your hand). Then slide the replacement bulb into the housing (it can go in either direction), and repeat the steps in reverse order. to put the housing and taillight back on.
Be careful to tighten the taillight bolts by hand only, they have a plastic thread sleeve that is easily stripped by a drill.
If you're asking how do you change a taillight bulb, then follow this procedure:
Open the trunk lid.
Disconnect the connectors from the taillights (taillight bulb connectors are visible by looking inside the trunk at the back of the tail lamps.) There may be an interior trunk trim panel that you have to take off but in most cases its just a series of thumb screws that hold them in.
Brake Lights/Taillights: 21/5 W
Rear Turn Signal Light: 21 W
Back-up Light: 21 W
Rear Side Marker Light: 5 W
Turn the bulb sockets 45 º counterclockwise to remove the bulbs.
If you're removing the taillamps with the bumper off there are 3 nuts and screws that hold the taillight to the rear panel of the car that have to come off from the inside of the trunk. Remove the nuts and screws, then remove the taillight.
