Input and output speed sensors are located on the side of the transmission case across from each other. they are plastic and screw into the trans on 3.3l and 3.8l 3.0 may have the sensor where the pass side axle goes into the tranny

97 Dodge Caravan Sport Once it warms up it stays in second gear until i put it on nutural- shut vehicle off- and then restart it and it will shift fine. What could it be?

The transmission is going into failsafe mode, meaning the computer is seeing an electrical problem and turning off all solenoids locking it into on gear. Best bet is to get a scan tool and read the codes in the transmission module, common problems are the input and output speed sensors. If you are having problems with the speedometer, you probably need an output speed sensor. I've also had problems with pressure switch codes that have lead to replacing the valve body. If you have a speed sensor code i recommend replacing both the input and output speed sensors, they screw into the front side of the transmission.

Mounted on the trany is a speedometer sensor. The vehical will not up-shift it, sensor, is malfunctioning. The vehicles computer doesn't know that it is not going fast enough to change gears.

My 1999 Dodge Caravan will not shift out of 1st. gear.

YES the speed sensor is first to check, but dont just go buy one and put it in. does the odometer work? if so, its getting a signal. The insrument clusters are common to fail, ususally a cracked solder joint in the circuit board. it will need to be removed and resoldered. if the odometer does not work, then check and verify that the spped sensor is indeed not putting any signal to the dash.

Transmission is not shifting gears while driving

First check fluid level. is check engine light on? is speedometer working? this can be caused by a malfuncition vehicle speed sensor or a mechanical condition such as a clogged filtre.

Transmission problems

there are two speed sensors that determine when to shift. input and output speed sensor. there are black and gray and located on the front of the trans under the air filter elements. they are pretty cheap, and i would suggest a trans fluid change too.

Shifting gears

the speed sensor is for Overdrive only, it does not shift the gears it sends the signal to the transmission control module that in turn signals the overdrive shift solenoid to engage/shift into OD.

2000 dodge caravan. Speedometer and odometer quit working and transmission will only work in reverse and low

hi there try to get a price on the speed sensor located on the transmission this sensor tells the computer how fast the van is going in turn the transmission shifts gears and there will be information sent to the speedometer . the reason the van only goes in low gear is to protect the system because the sensor is damaged so replace the speed sensor and try again , let me know how its running after relpaceing the sensor good luck
