The 4x4 system has a controller,or computer, called the Body Control Module and there will be stored trouble codes. To work on a system that's electronically controlled, you have to get the codes from the system.Every trouble code has a diagnostic route to follow to resolve the faulty component.I have read about Explorers having faulty door open/closed sensors. These set a code in the Body Control Module, and in the process, the BCM inhibits 4x4 operation, causing a no 4 wheel drive complaint. There is also an electric motor on the transfer case that can fail electrically or mechanically, along with speed sensors and fork position sensors that can give trouble.
SOURCE: want to disable auto 4wd
Do this first
Usely the vibs you are getting could be from wheel balance wore out wheel bearings or flat spots on tires.
Only do this after you checked the front end.
(You could remove the fuse under the dash but the fuse that runs the 4wd also more than likely runs other things in the vehical. Or you can dissconnect at the transfer case would be .)

I had the same problem and I finally found the solution after taking the panels from the inside of the door. Ford makes these vehicles with plastic clips to hold the bar that releases the latch and after so much repetitive usage of them they break. so most likely you will need to go to a ford dealership to get these clips which are stupidly priced at $3.00 a piece. All you need to do is take out the old pieces and put in the new and they'll most likely last you for another 10 yrs. but that's not a guaranteed fix from Ford.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.
