SOURCE: 4x4 will not engage, lights just blink, and you can here clicking

The 4x4 system has a controller,or computer, called the Body Control Module and there will be stored trouble codes. To work on a system that's electronically controlled, you have to get the codes from the system.Every trouble code has a diagnostic route to follow to resolve the faulty component.I have read about Explorers having faulty door open/closed sensors. These set a code in the Body Control Module, and in the process, the BCM inhibits 4x4 operation, causing a no 4 wheel drive complaint. There is also an electric motor on the transfer case that can fail electrically or mechanically, along with speed sensors and fork position sensors that can give trouble.

SOURCE: want to disable auto 4wd

Do this first
Usely the vibs you are getting could be from wheel balance wore out wheel bearings or flat spots on tires.
Only do this after you checked the front end.
(You could remove the fuse under the dash but the fuse that runs the 4wd also more than likely runs other things in the vehical. Or you can dissconnect at the transfer case would be .)

SOURCE: ford explorer 1997 xlt, the inside door handle does not work

I had the same problem and I finally found the solution after taking the panels from the inside of the door. Ford makes these vehicles with plastic clips to hold the bar that releases the latch and after so much repetitive usage of them they break. so most likely you will need to go to a ford dealership to get these clips which are stupidly priced at $3.00 a piece. All you need to do is take out the old pieces and put in the new and they'll most likely last you for another 10 yrs. but that's not a guaranteed fix from Ford.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.

in 4wd low the car will rev its nuts off and go real slow.in 2wd or 4wd auto the front/rear wheels will turn due to the oil flow in the gearboxes.put the car on wet grass in 2wd and see what happens, then try again in 4wd auto, you will NOTICE a difference.(just a little......)another way is to put it in 2wd and put a wood block under all 4 wheels.then lower slowly.......

How do I turn off 4x4 on a 2002 ford explorer?

You don't, it's all wheel drive, which means it puts power to the wheel or wheels where (it thinks) you need it, so it sometimes is acting like a regular 2WD vehicle, and seamless transitions to 4WD when you need it (like stabbing the gas turning right from a stop in the rain or snow). You can click 4WD HIGH or LOW and force it to power at least one wheel on each axle.

Cant tell if my front axles are locking in . the light on the dashboard works . the transfer case locks in its a 1996 ford explorer xlt

considering its winter the best way is to put some thing in front of front tires and try to move forwards if you cant put it in 4 wheel mode and then try it. if you climb over then axles are engaged.

did you change any tires? if the circumference of the tires are more than 1 inch difference from each this will cause the 4wd to try to engage because it sees a difference in wheel speed
