I hope you can help me. My car doesnt seem to know what gear it should be in at slow acceleration and in town speeds. When you depress the gas pedal for smooth reasonable city driving from a stop, the car goes along shifts normally until about 2300 rpm then downshifts the rpm goes up to the 3000 range then shifts to next gear then rpm hits 23-2400 rpm then it continues this cycle of shift up and down although the speed of travel or the accellerator pedal position isnt changing. trying to hold 35-40 mph is dreadful as this surging or actual cycling of shifting continues until you either drive harder or reach 60 mph or faster. What do you think. Also the idle seems a little low in gear at 5 or 600 rpm and vibrates the steering wheel.

One unit that operates ratio changes and is connected to the engine is that vacuum operated actuator on the transmission
it is possible that that unit is failing , vacuum hose is leaking and that will cause ratio changes as the vacuum varies
run the fault codes to check for wiring problems or VSS or TCM problems as well

I have the same issue - but notice its worse when you accelerate hard in 5th. I have changed all the ball joints, bearings and track rod ends but its still there. From trawling the various forums I'm starting to think I need to change the suspension arms and top strut bushes. 100K

The only fluid expansion tank I know of is for the cooling system, and if that is the case you my have a leak in the transmission cooler that is built into the radiator.

SOURCE: The overdrive quit working in my 2000 volvo s40.

Several suggestions, some cheap, others not. The overdrive relay is the first suspect. It's located on the relay rack behind the fuse panel (usually). Cheap fix. About $10 on Ebay. Just be sure the part numbers match. I always carry a spare. The speed sensor might be another source of problems. It measures RPMs and feeds the info to the computer. Not an easy do-it-yourself fix. Also, the transmission control module. An easy swap with a spare from Ebay. It hides under the dashboard, passenger side. A solenoid on the transmission locks the OD in and out. Not an easy do-it-yourself fix. Volvos are notorious for flaky issues like this, so I would try all the simple fixes before bringing it to your mechanic.

The car seems to be slowing down extreamly fast when im out of gear, its as though i have my handbreak on, and no there isnt a sign on the dashboard so i doubt its somthing to do with the handbreak. i dont...

As long as the gear shift calbe is routed correctly and adjusted correctly you can be sure you have a input spline problem the first sign is hard to engage first gear and hard to engage in reverse the S 40 have known problems for this your dealer should know TSB 43-47

I OWN A 2000 S40 AND I AM HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE TACHOMETER WHICH IS RACING WITHOUT STEPPING FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR . THE VEHICLE IS NOW HAVING TROUBLE STARTING ALSO.

I don't know the solution. My car a 2000 s40 just started having the same problem. It is now in the shop because the other night when I started the car the motor raced and would not slow down. After two try's of this, after the third time the car wouldn't start at all. After it sat overnight the car did start back up. Please post if you find a solution.

Dash panel all lights come on speedometer stops working on occasion. When this happens does not accelerate well.

sounds like a bad speed sensor, if sensor doesnt tell computer what speed your traveling then trany doesnt know what gear to select, try replacing speed sensor, that should solve your problem,im suprised check engine light didnt come on, anyway good luck hope this helps.

Flashing upside down arrow/ slow acceleration

This is a common problem of Volvo S40. You can try this trick to turn off the flashing arrow light.

1) Turn off Engine
2) Turn key to "On" position (Not start the engine), you will see the panel light will on
3) Step on the break paddle
4) Shift the gear from "P" to "L" 10 times
5) Turn key to " Off" position
6) Now you can start the engine.
7) If doesn't work, you can repeat the procedure.

Hope this tick help
Good luck
