!988 model should be a 700r4 transmission, if it will not go into any gear, first make sure your shifter cable or something else has not broken. You can look at the drivers side of the trans. while somebody is moving your shifter to make sure the shift lever is moving as it should.

If all that checks out, then your problem is going to be internally in the transmission. Could be either the torque convertor bad or the front pump bad.

Either way your transmission would have to be pulled and either rebuilt or replaced. Check with a good transmission shop in your area to see what they suggest. Hope this helps.

You need a rebuild at your local transmission servicer or buy a new one and have it installed i suggest goodwrench trannys.

Check you shift silinoids, there located inside trans mission pan on back of valve body. there are 2 of them.swap them with each other,if you have 1st &reverse then you know its one of the siliniods. if it makes no difference then you need to have your trans rebiut or get a new one.

My automatic transmission when in 1st gear goes in reverse and when in reverse goes in reverse no other gears work

Most likely you have a linkage problem between the shift lever and the transmission and or the rubber bushings for that linkage are bad. It can also be the pivot point of the shift lever.

I have a 2001 elantra. What would make it stay in reverse and 1st gear.it is a manual transmission

when you put it in reverse, first thing you feel a spring.after tthat you lift,
a security plate, this plate prevent you from going reverse into 1 gear.
cause the axel turn a little further when you allreddy has stop the car.
this takes two sec.thats why when putting it in reverse after you feel the spring you wait two seconds, then puch al the way in reverse.

92 geo metro with automatic transmission will not go out of 1st gear sometimes

my guess is its not electric shifted, (what trans model is it)
so step 2 in the FSM book says.... and i paraphrase
step1 is stall test (my guess passes in 1st and reverse)
step 2, line pressure test?
if that fails, tranny is bad.

2003 chevrolet cavalier, manual transmission lost 2nd, 4th and reverse but still has 1st, 3rd and 5th gears.

Sounds like one of the levers inside the transmission is either broken or otherwise disengaged. Remove the shifter to see if you can see any obvious reason.

My 2001 GMC Jimmy 4x4 Automatic with 84K miles. It winds when I put it in reverse and I think I only have 1st and 2nd gear. Additionally it revs high, like over 3000 rpm, delays and then eventually...

It winds up in 1st and then shifts right from 1st into 3rd. Then never shifts into 4th. Plus rev is gone. You broke the sun shell. The transmission will need to rebuilt or replaced.

My car wouldnt shift into first nor reverse

you have a definate concern inside the transmission your gears are marred badly the gears 2-5 are synchrnized and helical style for smooth shifting 1st and reverse are spur cut so you cant accidentally shift into these gears while driving i would look for a good used transmission

2005 Corolla's manual trasmission shifts gears, it clunks

hi mate , sounds like the SPIGOT bearing its a little bearing that allows the gearbox to be at a different seed than the engine flywheel and if this is in bad condition it will take the gearbox front shaft to a higher speed than comfortable for gearshift , in the meantime when you go for 1st or reverse gear just engage a gear like 4th without taking your foot off the clutch and then go for 1st or reverse, this will stop the gearbox spining long enough for a smooth shif, oNLY USE THIS METHOD WHILE STaTIONARY and see a professional when you get time.

I have a 97 f-250 7.3 with a manual trans. and it wants to jump out of reverse if I dont go to 1st gear and then to rev. first.

Sounds like the shift lever is not coming completely out of 2nd gear. So, by shifting into 1st gear, you recenter the shift lever. You can confirm this by going under the truck and moving the 1st - 2nd lever on the side of the transmission with your hand. If the shifter goes into reverse after you manually recenter the 1-2 lever, then you need to correct the problem that prevents the "normal" recentering of the 1-2 shift lever.

Possibilities are: Bent shift rod; worn shifter; worn shift rod at connection to shift lever on transmission.
